Defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad plays for the Dallas Cowboys. The most recent update about the veteran player is that he has signed a one-year contract with the Cowboys. After the injury of Sam Williams, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has figured out that Al-Quadin Muhammad has the ability to help the team. He has six years of NFL experience and a record of 12 career sacks, primarily with the Indianapolis Colts. After the loss of some key pass rushers, the Cowboys are currently in search of talents like DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons.
Al-Quadin Muhammad Career Stats
According to ESPN’s news reporter, Adam Schefter, Williams was expected to have a great impact in his third year. Unfortunately, he had suffered a torn ACL during practice in training camp. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told the reporters in his press conference, “Especially for him because he was clearly going to be a primary contributor, as we all felt. Excellent offseason; did the extra. I was able to see him do some work over the summer in person. It’s unfortunate when these things happen.“
But with such a loss, the Dallas Cowboys aggressively brought in replacements to give their defense some depth. They signed Al-Quadin Muhammad (on a one-year contract) and veteran Shaka Toney (on a two-year contract).
Al-Quadin Muhammad was a sixth-round pick (196th overall) by the New Orleans Saints in the 2017 NFL Draft. That is where he played as a rookie. After being released at the end of the 2018 preseason, the Indianapolis Colts signed him up, where remained on the active roster for four seasons from 2018-2021, playing in 64 games and starting 25 of them.
Al-Quadin recorded 11 of his 12 career sacks with the Colts, with the 12th coming in 2022 with the Chicago Bears. He returned to Indianapolis last season but had spent all of 2023 on the Colts’ practice squad. With his one game remaining on the six-game suspension that was issued by the league for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, Muhammad will be available for the second regular season game.
Dallas Exploring Other Veterans
Dallas may not be done exploring veteran pass rushers to replace Williams. Some of their options include veteran Carl Lawson, who has a connection to the team. Lawson and current Cowboys defensive run game coordinator Paul Guenther were together with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017. Lawson seems to have enough interest in joining the Dallas Cowboys owing to his star emoji, which he posted on his social media site just after William’s injury.
Defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan, could finish with a larger role this year. He said, “I got to step up. I got to be ready to play that much more. With [Sam Williams] here, obviously I was still playing a good amount, but now it’s that much more reps I have to take. I just got to step it up a notch. … I can pass rush too. I’m not just doing that in the MAC. I can do that here too.”
So not only did they lose a great player in Williams, but they also had to actively search for his replacement. Williams will miss the entire season with that torn ACL he suffered in last Sunday’s special teams drills.
