Dabo Swinney Gives Honest Take On 31-Point Loss To Georgia

Dabo Swinney Clemson Tigers loss to Georgia

Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers are licking their wounds after a blowout loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Tigers’ offense was stymied, and they only scored three points. While they kept it close in the first half, the Bulldogs steamrolled them in the second half. The head coach has been under fire but defended his team’s performance in a Sunday evening interview.

Dabo Swinney doesn’t think the loss was as bad as the score indicates. He was proud of how his team played and thought they “matched up well.” However, they couldn’t find ways to put points on the board.

“The scoreboard doesn’t indicate that. But we’ve been a part of games where we’ve blown somebody out, too. That doesn’t mean they didn’t have the talent. Sometimes it can get away from you, especially in openers.

“But we matched up well. It’s one of the positives. We were very physical. Again, it was just some details that really cost us. In a game like that, you don’t have a big margin for error. I think that’s one of the things that our guys will come out of this game – it’s good to see that.”

The game definitely got away from them. Even when the game was close, the Clemson Tigers could not get anything going on offense. It is the first time since 2013 that the program has lost by more than 30. It speaks to how good Swinney has been during his tenure. However, it also may also point towards the faults in the head coach’s lack of adaptation to the modern game.

Failure To Adapt

Dabo Swinney has been critical of the transfer portal and often refuses to use it. Clemson hasn’t been to the College Football Playoff since the transfer portal started its rise to prominence. While some may see the refusal as admirable, it has affected the talent on his team. Other programs that have utilized the portal effectively have seen more success over the past few years.

The adapt-or-die mentality doesn’t just apply to sports. A failure to adapt can be detrimental in any industry. While Dabo Swinney may have been pleased about Saturday’s performance, many fans were not. The pressure has increased for the rest of the season. There’s no shame in losing to the number-one team in the nation. However, if these struggles continue, Swinney could answer more difficult questions.
