Cristiano Ronaldo Gets Emotional After Scoring 900th Career Goal Against Croatia

Cristiano Ronaldo has made history as the first footballer to score 900 goals, reaching this milestone with a composed finish that put Portugal 2-0 ahead against Croatia. In what initially seemed like a routine Ronaldo goal—lurking at the back post to tap in a precise cross from the left; turned into a historic achievement.

Rafael Leao, positioned deep on the left, sent a perfect cross into the box where Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes were waiting. Leao’s accurate delivery was ideally suited for Ronaldo, who made no mistake in converting it, celebrating with the knowledge of his significant accomplishment.

The 39-year-old striker surpassed this remarkable milestone while wearing his national team jersey. Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 131 international goals, 450 for Real Madrid, 145 for Manchester United, 101 for Juventus, and 68 for his club Al Nassr as well as five for his first club Sporting Lisbon.

Although Croatia later scored through an own goal by Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot, this Nations League match will be remembered for Ronaldo’s historic achievement. According to Transfermarkt, Cristiano Ronaldo’s first goal came on October 7, 2002, for Sporting Lisbon against Moreirense, following a solo run.

Even with his immense confidence, Ronaldo might not have imagined that he would still be scoring goals 22 years later, surpassing 900. It took him just over five years to hit 100 goals, which he achieved against Tottenham on January 27, 2008, from the penalty spot.

Remarkably, he has achieved 400 goals in under nine years, making him the first player to approach 1,000 goals. Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s long-time rival, is the only other player to have scored over 800 goals, with a total of 838 for club and country. Cristiano Ronaldo’s unprecedented achievement is highlighted by his prolific scoring across his career. Notably, he has scored 130 goals for his national team, with his first international goal coming in a 2-1 loss to Greece during the Euro 2004 group stages.

What Acts as Cristiano Ronaldo’s Motivation

In a recent podcast with Rio Ferdinand that came out on Cristiano Ronaldo’s YouTube channel, he shared his thoughts regarding his biggest boost to carry on as a professional athlete despite being 39 years old. He stated that he has a desire to achieve the 1000 goal milestone, which he wants to be recorded on television (basically in a professional match).

Ronaldo claimed that then and only then, after achieving that milestone, he maybe will think of retiring. Lately, in many of his interviews, we have seen Ronaldo dropping hints of not even thinking about retirement before turning 41 or 42. This displays the mentality of one of the greatest athletes to has ever played the game. Following their Nations League match against Croatia, Portugal will take on Scotland on Sunday evening. It is somewhat certain that national coach Roberto Martinez will choose to start Ronaldo and expect him to do his routine job (scoring goals).
