Cowboys Offense Struggles: Lack of Big Plays Continues

The Cowboys offense needs to find their footing.

In a season expected to be magical for the Dallas Cowboys, their offense tells a different story four games in. The Cowboys rank near the bottom of the NFL in explosive plays through the first four weeks of the 2024 season. At least this is what has transpired for a team with so much history. The Cowboys rank dead-last in the league at creating explosive plays, and it’s even more alarming that this team is first in the NFL in wasted plays. This group is generating only four rushing attempts above ten yards, and the team can’t make defenses respect its offense.

Predictable Play Calling Hurts Offense

Play calling is the second reason for such a lack of explosive plays. It sometimes gets so predictable and fails to take advantage of the strengths available to the players. Wide Receiver CeeDee Lamb has done a great job, but the rest of the roster hasn’t been as talented or creative. As things stand now, it appears that a few players are making up the core of their offensive strategy.

Whenever these few players are shut down, the whole offense crumbles, thereby exerting intense pressure on coaches to come up with new sophisticated strategies for unlocking the player’s potential. Without such new play schemes and strategic changes, Lamb and Tight End Jake  Ferguson will have every defense zeroed in on shutting them down.

Cowboys’ Offensive Challenges Persist

Another reason why the Cowboys are not playing great is because of their inconsistent offense line. They are not solid at protection, which handicaps Quarterback Dak Prescott in making plays down the field. If the line can’t create enough time for Prescott, he’s forced to either scramble or throw short passes. This ultimately leads to a lack of chunk yardage and fewer opportunities for big plays. If the Cowboys are to have any hope of letting their playmakers shine, it is the offensive line that must step up. Otherwise, the cycle of mediocrity will remain forever doomed.

The lack of explosive playmakers outside of Lamb does not help. The receiving corps is shallow and, even worse, devoid of speed, making it far too easy for defenses to zero in on the key guys. While Ferguson has come alive at times, they are only flashes, not enough to keep defenses guessing. The absence of this ability makes the environment rather predictable, which will just help shutter the entire offense for the defense. The current roster needs someone to step up at this point as a reliable playmaker. Without that, their hopes for a dynamic offense will keep dwindling.

Conclusion

Dallas’s offense is under siege, mainly because the team does not create big plays. As the season progresses, the Cowboys’ coaching staff needs to reassess their strategy because a diversified offense with many players making impacts will have to be present to get the right play. With adjustments on the right level, they can turn things around and rekindle the spark all fans have waited for so anxiously. For now, it’s a hope that somebody comes along and breaks the cycle of underperformance and leads the Cowboys back to the way things used to be.
