Coventry vs Tottenham Hotspur: EFL Cup Preview, Prediction & Match Details

Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur will look to bounce back from a disappointing weekend as they face Championship side Coventry City in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night. Spurs are in the West Midlands after losing to their rivals Arsenal in the North London derby, while Coventry hopes to upset a Premier League team at The Coventry Building Society Arena.

Coventry returned from the international break with a draw against in-form Watford, having previously suffered a narrow defeat to Norwich City. The Sky Blues had a strong start at Vicarage Road, where they initially led but failed to extend their advantage, ultimately settling for a draw.

With a history of competing for promotion to the Premier League, expectations are high for Coventry this season, despite a shaky start that has them sitting in 15th place with just one win in five matches. Two of their three victories this season have come in the EFL Cup, with key contributions from Ellis Simms and summer signing Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Coventry vs Tottenham Hotspur: Team News, Stats & Head-to-Head

Coventry

In contrast to their FA Cup success, Coventry has struggled in the EFL Cup, having been eliminated in the first round last season by AFC Wimbledon. Meanwhile, Spurs experienced another setback with their loss to Arsenal, where they dominated possession but failed to convert chances into goals.

Coventry’s injury woes continue, with key midfielder Ben Sheaf out until the end of the month and Joel Latibeaudiere also nursing a knock. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto is sidelined until October due to an ankle issue.

Tottenham Hotspur

Sitting in 13th place in the Premier League, Spurs have only managed four points from four matches, with their sole victory coming against Everton. Despite their struggles in front of goal, manager Ange Postecoglou remains optimistic about bringing silverware to the club after a lengthy drought.

Tottenham will be without forward Richarlison as he recovers from a muscle injury, which may see summer signing Dominic Solanke continue in the attack. Yves Bissouma is also a doubt, potentially opening up opportunities for Pape Sarr and Lucas Bergvall to start. Wilson Odobert and Timo Werner may also be given starting roles to make an impact against Coventry.

Head-to-Head

The last match between these two teams took place back in 2013 in the FA Cup. Tottenham won the fixture by 3-0, thanks to the Clint Dempsey brace and also a goal from Gareth Bale. There has been no meeting of these teams, it has now been over a decade which makes it an interesting watch.

Possible Starting XI

Coventry City: Wilson; Van Ewijk, Binks, Thomas, Bidwell; Allen, Eccles, Mason-Clark, Rudoni, Wright; Simms

Tottenham Hotspur: Forster; Porro, Romero, Dragusin, Davies; Gray, Sarr, Kulusevski; Werner, Odobert, Solanke

Coventry vs Tottenham Hotspur: Prediction

Tottenham is the clear favorite to win this match. Considering the squad they have, it will become very difficult for Coventry to hold them up when they’re on attacks. Due to there being no clash for over a decade now, things can even go the other way around but it seems Tottenham won’t bottle it.
