Angel Correa scored a dramatic equalizer in the 95th minute, securing a 1-1 draw for Atlético Madrid against the reigning La Liga champions, Real Madrid, on Sunday. The 29-year-old first experienced a tense moment as he had to wait for the VAR review to confirm his onside status. However, Correa’s perfect timing on the run ultimately earned the hosts a crucial point.
Correa’s Late Strike Levels Madrid Derby
Ángel Correa once again came on as a sub to earn points for Diego Simeone’s team. He found the back of the net in the fifth minute of added time to earn a dramatic 1-1 draw against arch-rivals Real Madrid. The match was temporarily stopped for over 20 minutes due to objects being thrown onto the pitch by home supporters. The match was suspended in the 69th minute, just five minutes after defender Éder Militão netted the opener for the visitors. Tensions flared as Atlético ultras Fondo Sur hurled objects towards Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois who then notified the referee.
Following a lengthy delay exceeding 20 minutes, the players made their way back onto the pitch, and Atlético Madrid quickly intensified their efforts. The breakthrough came when substitute Correa found the net from close range. Correa capitalized on a swift counter-attack in the fifth minute of added time to level the scores. Real Madrid currently sits in second place in the league standings with 18 points. They trail Barcelona by three points and hold a two-point lead over Atlético Madrid, who are in third, after eight matches played.
Diego Simeone Criticizes Courtois For Celebration
Atlético’s manager Diego Simeone made a subtle jab at Courtois. He pointed out that the goalkeeper celebrated by looking at Atlético Madrid fans, so this made the home supporters angry. “You can celebrate a goal but not by looking at the fans, having a go, making gestures like that,” Simeone said. “The fans don’t just become angry by themselves, they become angry for a reason.”
Simeone also stated that Real Madrid supporters had previously thrown lighters at Courtois when he was still playing for Atlético Madrid. Aside from the angry home supporters and 95th-minute Correa’s equalizer, there was more bad news for Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper seemed uncomfortable towards the end of the match and Carlo Ancelotti confirmed he was injured. “Courtois had a muscular issue, he’ll be looked at tomorrow,” said Ancelotti.
What Next For Atletico Madrid
Atlético Madrid will play Benfica in the Champions League on Wednesday at Estadio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica. After, they face Real Sociedad in La Liga at Anoeta before they go for the international break. These are tough matches for Atlético Madrid, but they should be able to win these two games. Meanwhile, the draw puts them third in the league table with 16 points, two points behind Real Madrid at second, and five points behind Barcelona, who sits on top.
