Copa America Prize Money 2024: Winners, Runners-Up & More

The Copa America Prize Money is a topic of discussion after how it dramatically ended, seeing Messi and Argentina win over the underdogs, Colombians, in a heart-pounding match that had the entire world watching. Although the euros are currently happening simultaneously, everyone loved seeing teams from Central, South, and North America face off against one another to see who would come out on top.

Now, Argentina is crowned the champions and can celebrate back in their home country — with a huge pot of prize money.

Argentina won their 16th Copa America final after Messi helped defeat Colombia. Although the famous winger/striker had to be subbed off around 66 minutes into the second half due to an apparent ankle injury, his team persevered and they were able to find a last-minute goal that would see Colombia take home the second-place prize.

Martinez scored for his country in the 112th minute in dramatic fashion to beat Colombia in two stoppage times, bringing the game to a close before penalty kicks.

Now, Argentina can bask in the 16 million dollars of Copa America prize money prize that they earned for being the winner of the Copa America. Similarly, Colombia doesn’t go home empty-handed — they deserve the $7 million awarded to the runner-up of this prestigious tournament, split amongst the organization, players, staff, family members, and the national federation.

And, Argentina is used to winning. They have won or been the runners-up, in almost every single Copa America in the last twenty years. In 2021, Argentina beat Brazil in an exciting match. In 2015 and 2016, they were bested twice in a row by Chile, but still made the final game. Before the 2010s, their last finals appearance was twice against Brazil in 2007 and 2004, where they earned second place both times.

Copa America Prize Money & Awards

No tournament is complete without awards given to the best players, highest goal scorers, and best team. James Rodriguez of Colombia earned the Golden Ball, which is a huge honor, but fell on deaf ears since he had just lost the final to Argentina. He had a great tournament for a player who has had a bit of a lull in his career in the last few years for club and country.

The Copa America Golden Boot went to Lautaro Martinez, especially for his last-minute goal for his country that saw him earn his team the trophy. Plus, his five other goals throughout the competition were enough for Argentina to get through the group stages and knockout rounds. Some of his most memorable goals were the opener against Canada, scoring twice in a game against Peru, and the 112th-minute goal against Colombia.

The 2024 Copa America Golden Glove was given to Emiliano Martinez, one of the best keepers in the world who currently plays in the Premier League. He made numerous saves throughout the tournament, including two key penalty saves against Ecuador to keep his country in the game.

The 2024 Copa America team of the tournament included many players from Brazil and Argentina, largely dominating the starting eleven and the bench. It is now a wonder that so many Argentinian members were on the squad list due to their proficiency in the tournament, especially their dominance in the group stages against lower-ranked teams.

Based on how well the tournament went and the appreciation it received worldwide, it is expected to raise standards in the next one. Moreover, there will be a definite increase in the Copa America prize money, for the winners, runners-up, and the rest of the participants.
