Connor McDavid, the man, the myth, the legend. McDavid is hands down one of the best players in the NHL and possibly in the league’s history. He has earned his reputation with his consistent, dominant, and technical gameplay and outstanding hockey sense. After a two-on-one rush with his renowned partner in crime, Leon Draisaitl, he scored off the rush, earning his 1,000th point tonight against the Nashville Predators. He is the fourth-fastest player in the NHL to reach 1,000 points.
Connor McDavid’s Career
Connor McDavid is one of the players you half-expect to have been birthed with a pair of skates on his feet. As soon as he touched the ice for the first time, he knew he was made for it. Born in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada, the 27-year-old got his shot at the OHL (junior leagues) at the age of fifteen, one year below the age requirement. From an early age, he impressed everyone lucky enough to see him.
In the OHL Draft, like his NHL Entry Draft, he was the top pick. In 2012, the Eerie Otters selected McDavid, and he continued to be the name commonly spoken in the OHL until 2015. The most decorated player in OHL history, McDavid traded his Otters jersey, for an Oiler jersey. When McDavid was 18, he finally had a shot at the apex of professional hockey. Selected by the Edmonton Oilers in 2015, McDavid proved his superstar fame, with an untouchable rookie season.
Although his first year as an official NHL player was cut short due to a fractured clavicle, he put up a jaw-dropping 48 points, comprised of 16 goals and 32 assists in 45 games for the Edmonton Oilers. His second season in the NHL only grew his fame. He led the NHL league in points and received the Ted Lindsay Award for the most outstanding player as well as the Hart Trophy for most valuable player.
It Gets Better From Here
After his second season with the Edmonton Oilers, McDavid signed an eight-year extension worth $100 million. In the following seasons, Connor McDavid has struggled to keep his name out of the headlines. He blew past other leading NHL players multiple seasons in a row. One of his most unfathomable seasons was in 2022-2023 when Connor McDavid earned 153 points. Let that number marinate for just a moment. In 82 games, he scored 64 goals and had 89 assists, which is truly remarkable. McDavid started his season off this year looking to hit his 1,000th point. He started the hockey season with 982 points.
Last night’s game against the Nashville Predators was the projected game in which McDavid would hit 1,000. That dream nearly faded when the Predators unexpectedly put up a significant fight. One goal was down in the first, and the objective seemed threatened. The second period started with multiple chances for the Edmonton Oilers. Roughly three minutes into the second period, Connor McDavid and his long-time fellow ace of a player broke out of the neutral zone, on a two-on-one rush. Hold, pass, and a score, and suddenly Connor McDavid had become the fourth player in NHL history to make it to 1,000 points in that short a time.
A True NHL Legend
With more than six awards in the OHL, 2016 NHL All-Rookie Team, five-time NHL First All-Star Team, seven-time All-Star player, and two-time NHL Second All-Star Team player, with countless titles, trophies, and awards, Connor McDavid is a definition of a hockey legend. Years and years of dedication, passion, and wit have only furthered his career, talent, and credit. Alongside Wayne Gretzky, we can expect to see Connor McDavid, beyond a shadow of a doubt, in the Hockey Hall of Fame soon.
