Commanders Sign Kicker No. 5 Austin Seibert, and Hopefully The Last

Washington Commanders jerseys have been released.

The Washington Commanders have announced via their Facebook Page they have signed Kicker Austin Seibert. He’s been the fifth kicker since March of this year. Seibert was signed in the wake of the franchise releasing Cade York, who missed two field goals in Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was rumored Seibert was going to be next in line, but Head Coach Dan Quinn told media on Monday there would be no clear decision until Wednesday. Speaking to the media on Monday, Quinn said releasing York was “the best thing for the team.”

Commanders Hope This Is The Final Stop For Kickers

Commanders, Austin Seibert, Jets,

Austin Seibert’s last stop was with the New York Jets and was released during their roster cuts this season. Siebert has appeared in 31 games, made 56 of his 62 point-after attempts, and is 45 of 56 (80%) on field goal attempts. His career-long is from 53 yards. The Commanders are trying to regroup at the kicker position after watching one kicker fail in the preseason and the other in Week 1.

Going into Week 2 against the Giants the Commanders will need to ensure they can score points and prove they are someone to fear in the NFC East. Considering they were last in the NFC East standings last season at 4-13, having everyone firing on all cylinders will be important, which includes their kicker.

Commanders Will Need A Trustworthy Kicker Week 2

The last time the Washington Commanders played the New York Giants was on December 18, 2022. The Giants won that game with a final score of 20-12.  In that game, they kicked two field goals, so the score would have been way worse if the kicker was off that day. The good thing is Seibert comes into the position ready to go and not too cold. He last kicked on August 17  during a preseason game for the New York Jets against the Carolina Panthers. He successfully made a 52-yard field goal, helping the Jets beat the Panthers 15-12.

Pressure Will Be On Seibert Week 2

Seibert didn’t cause this chaos, but he has now inherited it. Regardless of the outcome of Week 2 vs. the Giants, Seibert will have to make every field goal to justify himself. Otherwise, he’s just going to be another kicker who can’t do the one job he’s been hired to do. No one wants to look at their first day on the job like this, but stability is needed immediately.

The Commanders cannot wait for him to get there; he needs to be there the moment he’s called upon. The NFL is not an exact science, but it is a game of inches. The numbers could fall either way and to come up three points short because of a missed field goal will sting.
