In a not-so-surprising move, the Washington Commanders have released Kicker Cade York. This comes after the kicker missed two field goals in their Week 1 season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He was wide right all game, missing from 56 and 47 yards in Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Bucs. While those six points didn’t make much of a difference, they were still six points they should have had. ESPN reported Monday that the conditional seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns that was given for York is null apparently. This is due to the fact he was not on the roster for two games.
Commanders And Kickers: How Did They Get Here?

The Kicker fiasco began early in the offseason when the Commanders signed Brandon McManus. He was even given a $1.5 million-dollar signing bonus. However, that deal went bad quickly when he was accused of sexual assault. As a result, the Commanders let him go, eventually finding Riley Patterson.
Patterson had no competition before preseason and could have sealed the deal if he had performed well in the preseason games. That would not be the case. Patterson would miss two field goals from 49 and 43 yards in their Week 2 Preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. The Commanders lost to the Dolphins 13-6, which resulted in Patterson getting released, and which led to the York deal.
Before arriving at the Commanders, York did double duty on both Tennessee Titans’ practice squad and eventually was on the New York Giants 53-man roster. In March, he was back with the Browns and, after having a solid training camp, was traded to the Commanders.
Commanders and Kickers: A Brief History
It hasn’t always been this way.
The Commanders’ history with Kickers is not a rotating door in comparison to their quarterback changes. From 2015-2021 it was Dustin Hopkins until he was released in October 2021. Then came Chris Blewitt, but he was released the following month after two games. Then came Joey Slye. He was 12-for-12 on field goals with Washington in 2021 and was brought back for the 2022 season. Last season he played in all 17 games and for the Commanders and set a new franchise record with his 61-yarder against the Eagles. Nowadays he dons a New England Patriots Jersey and is 3 for 3 in his debut game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Commanders Begin Plans To Find The Next Kicker
Now that York is gone, the question is what’s next? Quinn told reporters on Monday don’t expect any answers until Wednesday on York’s replacement. However, rumors are swirling already the Commanders are expected to sign former Jets kicker Austin Seibert.
Austin Seibert was released by the Jets during this year’s roster cuts before the season began. He doesn’t have big numbers, but when he’s out there he’s decent. Last season he was 1 out of 1 field goal attempts, his longest being 34 yards. During his time with the Detroit Lions, Seibert made 3 out of 5 field goal attempts. His longest was 48 yards, resulting in a field goal percentage of 60%.
