Commanders Carrying Strong Momentum Entering Week 4

The Commanders visit the Cardinals Sunday.

On Sunday, The Washington Commanders will face the Arizona Cardinals with all the momentum they’ve ever dreamed of having. Going into Week 4, the Commanders seek their third win after beating the Cincinnati Bengals 38-33 Monday night. The Cardinals hope to bounce back from their 20-13 loss to the Detroit Lions.

However, Sunday’s game and the story is all about Jayden Daniels. He will play in front of fans who most remember him for his three seasons at Arizona State. He also returns to Arizona as a Heisman Trophy Winner,  NFC Offensive Player Of The Week, and the Pepsi Zero Sugar Player of The Week. The Commanders also enter Week Four as No. 1 in the NFC East for a second week in a row.

Commanders Cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr will reportedly return to the defensive lineup Sunday. He returns from recent surgery on an injured thumb but practiced last week. This is good news considering the Cardinals are averaging 200 passing yards a game. There were never plans Forbes Jr. would play Week Three. Reports had always forecasted Forbes Jr.’s return to be in Week Four. Commanders Defensive Coordinator Joe Whitt didn’t speak too much about Forbes Jr.’s return Friday when speaking to reporters. He focused more on the defensive strategy going into Sunday’s game.

“We talked about the first week there was some communication issues, and we shored that up. …We tweaked some of the coverages from the standpoint of reductions,” Whitt said. “Now it’s just, it’s still really the third down where, alright, sometimes we got to understand the leverage and make the plays. Now it’s to the, ‘Alright, how can I help him make the plays and get that done.’ So, hopefully, this is the week that we played a full brand of what we want (to) do.”

The Commanders defense so far has allowed 11 touchdowns scored against them this season. Monday night they got exposed early by Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow’s 41-yard touchdown throw to Wide Receiver Ja’Marr Chase. The drive took six plays but covered 71 yards in under four minutes. They have the worst third-down defense (61.4%).

They are tied for second worst in red zone defense when it comes to giving up touchdowns. When it comes to what kind of impact Forbes Jr.’s return will have on the defense, Whitt didn’t give a definite answer. He said, “I expect each week it is going to be different people…I do expect whoever goes out there to play winning football. I do expect that.”

Cosmi: Commanders Are In Sync

Right Guard Sam Cosmi is very hyped about what’s going on in Washington right now, especially after Monday night’s performance. Speaking on the Next Man Up Podcast, Cosmi said, “We were just working as one…It was pretty cool to see. That was probably one of the first games I’ve ever been a part of where I’m like, I don’t honk [there’s anything they can do] that can stop us right now…We were just in sync…It was really go to be a part of…”

Cosmi was listed with a minor injury earlier this week. According to the current Commanders Depth Chart, he is fully active. While he’s active for Sunday, Wide Receiver Jamison Crowder (thigh) is out, along with Defensive End Clelin Ferrell who has a knee injury. Running Back Austin Eckler is out with a concussion. He is currently in Virginia away from the team going through concussion protocols. There are no updates on when he is expected to return.
