Commanders Running ‘Nice College Offense?’ Bengals Player Thinks So

Did Cincinnati Bengals Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt say the quiet part out loud about the Washington Commanders Offense? In a recent interview, the Bengals cornerback implied the Commanders are not playing a complex game.

“…They don’t make him do a lot. They keep it really simple for him,” Taylor-Britt said, via ESPN. “Nice college offense, Kingsbury, the OC, so they love to move guys around here and there, but just keep it real simple for him. I heard his pass percentage is very high, but he’s only throwing short routes, you know? Some intermediate stuff, quick throws.”

There’s a lot to be desired from a man who plays for a team that has yet to win their first game this season, but he’s right to a certain degree. The Commanders are playing very conservatively with Daniels. In Daniels’s defense, he is a rookie, still learning the game as a starting quarterback. That cannot be forgotten. However, there are some notable points to be made from Taylor-Britt’s comments.

Commanders Look To Get Terry McLaurin More Explosive Plays

Commanders, Terry McLaurin

First, there is the lack of explosive action from Terry McLaurin. It’s speculative at most on why he hasn’t been a big part of the scoring scheme in Washington. When fans look at how Sunday’s game was played, something is off. As mentioned before, McLaurin is not being ignored. He caught six for 22 yards in Sunday’s 21-18 win. Some may think the Commanders should get him more involved, but their use of McLaurin is right on target with last season.

In 2023, by Week 3 McLaurin was averaging around 11 yards a game, and his longest was 30 yards in the 35-33 win vs. the Denver Broncos in Week 2. In the Week 1 20-16 win against the Arizona Cardinals, his longest catch was 19 yards. There are some fluctuations in how deep they are throwing the ball when you look at his numbers, but McLaurin is getting his hands on the ball.

Commanders’ Ball Control Is Normal Strategy

On Sunday, the Commanders also dominated the time of possession which gives Daniels more time to settle in. However, this too isn’t surprising. In the first two games of the 2023 season they did the same. In Week 1 they controlled the ball for 31:23 and in Week 2 they controlled the ball for 33:45.

In Week 3 when the Commanders did not control the time of possession they lost to the Buffalo Bills 37-3.  This too is not the sign of a “college offense”, but par for the course for Washington early in the season. The only difference was the lack of scoring. Sunday’s game was won on all field goals.

QB Jayden Daniels Is Still A Rookie

Taylor-Britt is correct on one thing: Commanders QB Jayden Daniels percentages are high, but that’s due to the conservative play. On Sunday, Daniels averaged 7.8 yards a throw. The problem with this is that doesn’t constitute a “college offense.” Former Commanders Quarterback Kirk Cousins, now with the Atlanta Falcons, hasn’t thrown more than ten yards on average. Robert Griffin III was the same. The only difference this season is the lack of the deep ball.

So there’s nothing new about how the Commanders are playing. Every fan just desires consistency and wins, something the Commanders have not had in the past couple of seasons.
