Commanders Dominate the NFC East Heading into Week 3

Washington Commanders jerseys have been released.

The Washington Commanders scored no touchdowns in Sunday’s 21-18 win against the New York Giants, but here they are, going into Week 3 leading the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles are No.2, with the Dallas Cowboys at No.3. The Giants are last.

The Commanders and the Giants are the first two teams from the NFC East to square off this season. The next NFC East game for the Commanders will be against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 29. Until then, the Giants will face the Cowboys on Sept. 24. For those wondering how, just how could this have happened? It’s simple: The Commanders and Giants were the first to face each other in the NFC East this season.

However, it still looks good to see the Commanders at the top of the division for at least a week.

Washington Commanders On Top In Division, Still At The Bottom of Power Rankings

Commanders, NFC East

The Washington Commanders are still far from being a big topic of conversation, but did turn some heads this past week finding a way to win.  Still, they failed to move up the NFL Power Rankings. This week they are No. 28, up one from the previous week.

NFL’s Eric Edholm, when it came to the Commanders’ performance this week wrote, “Dan Quinn‘s first victory in D.C. won’t earn him a ton of style points, but the Commanders got it done. A strong run game helped pick up Jayden Daniels and the lagging pass game. If Brian Robinson (who had the two longest runs of his career Sunday) and Austin Ekeler can be as efficient as they were against the Giants, it’ll be a big boost for Daniels while he figures out the necessary timing (he took five sacks) and touch, and while the staff tries to generate big plays through the air…”

He added, “…The problem is that the Commanders don’t face the Giants again until Week 9. In between then, Washington goes up against some defenses that range from respectable to very good. Quinn’s team also has to figure out its coverage issues on defense and knock out the silly penalties. But a win’s a win.”

Washington Commanders HC Dan Quinn: Each Week Will Get Better

“The best teams don’t need losses to learn their lessons,” head coach Dan Quinn told media on Monday. “I do believe that so much of the first month of the NFL is about who can learn the lessons the fastest. We will definitely be a team that will improve week to week. We’re definitely on to Cincinatti but we got to stay on us for a minute and make sure although we are a new team that is learning but we can’t have mistakes that repeat in a week or another week. Those are really important topics.”

Those mistakes this week begin with addressing the false starts.  Four Commanders players committed five false start penalties inside the 20 in Sunday’s game. “Those are the ones I would call the pre and post-snap ones. They will fall under discipline. Those are the ones you gotta get rid of…Like most things, more practice at it for sure…You don’t want them, but I can live with the combative ones. The pre and the post-snap ones are a no beuno for me.”

Commanders’ Week 2 Win A Big Deal For HC Quinn

The last time head coach Dan Quinn was an NFL Head Coach was with the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to 2020, leading them to Super Bowl LI. His time came to an end in Atlanta when the team went winless in the first five games of the 2020 season.  When asked about how big a deal this week’s win was, Quinn said his mind was on his team. “When we didn’t deliver in Tampa I was really bummed,” he said. “To have the win at home against a division team? That’s a really big deal. We had spent some time the night before the game [discussing] the history of the NFC East. It was awesome.”
