Washington Commanders Add Marshon Lattimore to Dynamic Roster

Marshon Lattimore's injury keeps him out for Week 10.

The Commanders added a four-time Pro Bowler to their roster going into Week 10. This was a last-minute move before the NFL’s Nov. 5, 4 p.m. trade deadline.

Announced on their website, Washington has traded a third-, fourth- and sixth-round pick in the 2025 draft to the Saints in exchange for Cornerback Marshon Lattimore and a 2025 fifth-round pick.  This comes as the Commanders continue working on shoring up a Secondary that has only shown sparks of greatness this season. Don’t panic: The Commanders didn’t sell the farm. They still have seven picks for the 2025 NFL Draft.

Marshon Lattimore Trade: By the Numbers

Marshon Lattimore has played his entire career with the Saints, beginning in 2017, averaging 40 tackles a season till 2021.  From 2022 to now, he’s only played 24 games but still averaged over 20 solo tackles a game.

A Commanders press release stated Lattimore recorded six interceptions, 44 pass breakups, and 187 tackles from 2019-21. With Lattimore, the Saints were a top-15 team in passing yards allowed in 2020 and 2021. The release also states they held quarterbacks to the fourth-lowest passer rating each season. ESPN reports Lattimore has two more years remaining on his contract that calls for cap hits of $18 million in 2025 and $18.5 million in 2026.

Will Lattimore Suit Up for the Commanders’ Defense Sunday?

It’s unclear whether or not Lattimore will suit up for Sunday’s home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers, coming into Northwest Stadium 6-2 but 3-1 away, face an undefeated Commanders home team.  Having more defensive experience on the field Sunday would be a great benefit, but injuries persist.

Lattimore comes to the team still questionable with a hamstring injury. It’s believed he can and will perform at a high level when healthy. There has been no word on how serious the injury is, but he’s listed on the Commanders’ Depth Chart as a starter.

The only other two defenders injured as of Wednesday were defensive end Javontae Jean-Beaptiste, who moved to Injured Reserve due to an ankle injury, and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who also moved to Injured Reserve with a pectoral injury.

No trade for Forbes

Tuesday’s news is a surprise for many who thought Cornerback Emmanual Forbes Jr. was on the trading block.  Sports Illustrated reported Monday that trade rumors began with performance issues earlier in the offseason and during training camp. So far, Forbes has seven tackles this season.

With that rumor up in smoke for the most part, the Commanders can get back to work on more defensive dividends. The New York Giants has 162 passing yards on the Commanders Sunday. The Chicago Bears threw for 105 yards against the Commanders defense. Even in their 40-7 win against the Carolina Panthers, they were on the hook for 85 offensive passing yards.  It will be interesting to see what effect Lattimore brings to the secondary and if they can put a freeze on pass-happy teams.

The Steelers had 259 passing yards in their 26-18 win against the Giants, along with 12 passing first downs. In their 37-15 win against the New York Jets, they had 260 passing yards.  The defensive shakeup of a Pro Bowl addition could make all the difference in the Commanders remaining undefeated at home. It would also be interesting to see if having him on the field makes the Steelers change their offensive strategy.
