Colt McCoy Retires after 14 Seasons, Begins Exciting New Chapter in Broadcasting

Colt Mccoy

Former Washington Commanders Quarterback Colt McCoy has retired after 14 seasons. According to Peter Schrager, Senior National Writer for Fox Sports, McCoy will move to the world of broadcasting.

On X, Schrager wrote, “After 14 years, Colt McCoy tells me he is retiring from the NFL. One door closes, another opens. McCoy already has a high-profile broadcasting job secured, which will be announced later today. Congrats to Colt on an awesome NFL career!” On his X account, McCoy posted “Thank you football. Excited for the next chapter.”

McCoy played college football for the Texas Longhorns before being drafted in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He played there for two years before moving to four different teams. His body of work includes the San Francisco 49ers (2013), Washington Commanders (2014-2015, 2017-2019), New York Giants (2020), and Arizona Cardinals (2021-2022). Here’s a summary of his career stats:

  • 56 NFL games (36 starts)
  • 7,975 passing yards
  • 34 touchdowns
  • 32 interceptions

Colt McCoy loved the game

One thing that sticks out about McCoy is his silent love for the game. It’s rare to find any negative response from him online or in any postgame interviews. As a Commander, he was available when called upon. Don’t judge him by his QBR or his completion percentages.  In the past seven years, any Commanders QB who could make anything happen was respected and appreciated for the work put in. Colt is on that list. Even when he left to play for the Cardinals, defended starter Kyler Murray against critics, while dealing with numerous injuries he remained positive and supportive.

Colt McCoy Retirement: Next Steps

When he was released last year, he told Sports Illustrated, “I haven’t really talked much about my situation – I never like to give excuses. I’ve been fortunate to play 14 years, I tore my elbow pretty bad and I’m not sure I’m gonna get over that, to be honest…injuries are part of the game. I’ve certainly had my fair share and it’s almost kind of like a hard stop. So, we’ll see but [I] had many opportunities to jump back in last year week to week in a lot of places. I physically just wasn’t able to do it.”

Which leads him and his fans to this point of transition. It’s a good point, one that keeps him around the game he loves.  McCoy will join NBC Sports’s Big Ten football coverage, making his debut on Sept. 7 when Nebraska vs. Colorado. This is a great game to start the next chapter of his career on because it includes the biggest storyline in college football: Deion Sanders aka “Coach Prime”. He’ll enjoy that game for sure.   Not a bad game to start the second portion of your life with. All the best Colt!
