Colombia faced Argentina in their 2026 World Cup qualifier games. Before the game, the Colombian side had faced Peru some days back. They however managed a 1-all draw thanks to Luis Diaz’s late-minute header. Despite the draw, Nestor Lorenzo expected his side to put up a much-rejuvenated performance against the Argentines.
It was expected that the Colombian team would be more conscious of how difficult the task of playing against Argentina is. Especially several weeks back in the Copa America when they lost to the same team in the final. Nestor Lorenzo’s side in the end went into the game against the World Champions and took out the needed 3 points

The Game started with intensity from both teams. Although Colombia looked the most aggressive, they searched for revenge over their loss in the Copa America final. Their breakthrough came with Mosquera after a beautiful cross from James Rodriguez saw the Wolves defender’s header. The goal had given them the lead. Argentina came out in search of a goal but they couldn’t easily beat the Colombian defensive lines. Jhon Duran and Luis Diaz had their chances of doubling the lead, however, they were unable to find the net.
Early in the 2nd half, Argentina found the equalizer of the 1st Nico Gonzalez found the breakthrough for Argentina. Colombia continued to cause all sorts of trouble for the Argentine team. A foul on Munoz by Otamendi led to a Penalty for the Colombians and James Rodriguez wasted no time in giving his team the lead. Colombia continued to maintain its intensity and hard work preventing the Argentine from finding an equalizer. In the end, it paid off as they won 2-1.
Lionel Scaloni on the Results
Lionel Scaloni spoke about how the game panned out. He said: “If I speak, they’ll say we don’t know how to lose. I think we played a good game, according to the circumstances we gave our best at all times and we could have even won it we don’t like to lose after the penalty, we practically didn’t play what bothered me, that’s what I saw.”
Nestor Lorenzo assessment
Colombia’s coach Nestor Lorenzo revealed his opinions about the game. The Argentine expressed his delight in his team’s performance. He said: “To beat the best team today there is no single key, you have to do many things well. The team showed that when they had to defend, they did it, and when they had to play, they did it and even had the chance to score one more goal. We have obtained great victories and the idea is for Colombia to continue rubbing shoulders with the best,” he said with determination.”
He continued saying: “A team grows with important victories because it knows what it has to do to win. You have to realize that you can set a high ceiling and stay there, that will be our challenge.”
Nestor Lorenzo finally added saying: “We work on the set piece a lot, but it is not our preference. James is one of the best pitchers in the world and he gives us that variation that we have to take advantage of,” he explained.
