Wednesday night marked the end of the 2024 Prospect League season. The college offseason gives players opportunities to play for independent organizations in towns who are hungry for summer baseball. The two-month adventure came to a close with the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp downing the Terre Haute Rex 4-2 to secure their first ever league championship. The league gives exposure and opportunity to players, and exciting fun for fans.

The two-plus month stretch of June and July captivates towns and shows what the love of baseball can provide. Players who gave it their all this summer in the Prospect League will go back to their school as better players and with experiences they’ll take with them for the rest of their lives. The exposure these players get will help propel some of them to get better college offers, more leverage with their current school, and improved draft stock. The quality baseball put on throughout the Midwest is a seasonal tradition that keeps fans coming back wanting more every summer.

Illinois Valley Wins Prospect League

Baseball is a bulwark in many communities across the globe. It has been the national pastime in the United States, and despite the rise in the popularity of other sports, baseball is still number one in many places. Towns and cities that value the game are innumerable and deserve to be entertained and fascinated by the game fans adore. For 16 Midwestern cities, the Prospect League puts on a two-month season with some of the best collegiate players in the country to entertain fans in these communities.

Ranging from Iowa to Pennsylvania and Michigan to Tennessee, the league has become a staple for many places that a team calls home. Since 1963, the Prospect League has shown fans in small towns and cities quality baseball, from college standouts and future stars of the sport. Hall of Famers Kirby Puckett and Mike Schmidt once took the field for a summer in the Prospect League. World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Josh Smith helped launch their careers by playing in the league, and their stories are not rare. Just this year, in the 2024 MLB Draft, 25 players selected have gone through the Prospect League on their baseball journey.

Historic Season for the Illinois Valley

The baseball journey for this summer was highlighted in the Illinois Valley, where the Pistol Shrimp took home their first-ever league championship, beating the Terre Haute Rex in the second game of a best-of-three series. Leading their division going into July, the Pistol Shrimp clinched their spot in the postseason with a month to play. They finished the season with the second-best record in the Prospect League, the best in their division, and the best in their conference, giving them a great outlook for the playoffs.

The Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp won back-to-back home playoff games to advance to the League Championship Series, where they were to play the Terre Haute Rex. The Rex paved their path to the series by taking down the league’s best team, the Chillicothe Paints. In the first game of the series in Terre Haute, the Pistol Shrimp won a back-and-forth slugfest 13-8 on the back of three home runs, including a grand slam. When the best-of-three headed back to the Illinois Valley, the Pistol Shrimp took Game Two 4-2, aided by a six-inning save to finish the season.

Looking Ahead in the Prospect League

The season may be over, but there were plenty of moments for the players and the Prospect League communities that will stay with them long after the lights go out. The 2024 season saw the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp win their first league championship. Next season will bring in a whole new crop of talented and hungry players looking to showcase their ability on the diamond, and they’ll be received by fans and towns that are eager to see it all unfold.

Baseball comes in many forms. The majors are a staggering sight that exhibits the awe of what sport can be. The minors show us what the sport could and will be in the coming years. The Prospect League isn’t on par with these levels of baseball, but it holds a special place for those who support it and those who help make it happen every year, making it one of the Midwest’s best summertime traditions and one that provides baseball fans with a taste of the national pastime.
