Colin Kaepernick is one of the most polarizing figures in sports. Almost a decade ago, he was leading the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance. Now, he is trying to convince a team to give him another chance. For the past few offseasons, he has trained tirelessly, hoping a team would at least give him a chance in training camp, but to no avail. He is back on his quest this offseason, hoping to get an opportunity in 2024.
Colin Kaepernick: Quest For NFL Comeback
It’s been over seven years since Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem of a preseason game. The 36-year-old quarterback’s goal is to be on an NFL team. He again pleaded with teams to give him a chance, even if it is just for training camp.
“We’re still training, still pushing. So hopefully, we’ve just got to get one of these team owners to open up.”
“I mean, it’s something I’ve trained my whole life for. So to be able to step back on the field, I think that would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. Also, I think it’s something that I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”
Colin Kaepernick understands the odds are stacked against him. Most owners will not sign off on the circus that he brings to a team. Whether you agree with his actions or not, his signing would come with a media circus. At this point in the season, teams are trying to avoid the media circus, not actively invite it.
Unlikely Comeback
It is unlikely that Colin Kaepernick will ever see an NFL field again. Outside of the off-the-field controversies, his play on the field wasn’t stellar when he left the league. In his last two years with the 49ers, his record was 3-16 as a starter, with 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions. At 36 years old, he has lost the ability to be a devastating dual-threat quarterback. A team would have to be in dire need of a quarterback to give him a chance.
At this point, Colin Kaepernick has been out of the league too long. Teams would rather take a chance on a young rookie than an aging quarterback who hasn’t played in seven years. This won’t stop him from trying. If injuries do start to pile up for a team, it will be interesting to see if anyone gives him a look or whether his quest will end in disappointment again.
