Polarizing Colin Kaepernick in Contact with Chargers and 1st Year Coach Jim Harbaugh

Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick still believes he has what it takes to not only play in the NFL but do so at a high level. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback last took a snap in January 2017 but has been politicking for another shot at reviving his playing career. Kaepernick was seemingly blacklisted from playing in the NFL again after his controversial national anthem protest caused an uproar that spread across the country.

“It’s something I’ve trained my whole life for. To be able to step back on the field, I think that would be a major moment, a major accomplishment for me. Also, I think it’s something that I could bring a lot to a team and help them win a championship.”

With no team seemingly willing to give Kaepernick another opportunity to play in the league, it appears he may have other options within the NFL. At 36 years old and not having played professional football in nearly eight years, it could be an intriguing option for him.

Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he has had discussions with Kaepernick about joining the Chargers in a non-playing capacity. He stated he spoke with Kaepernick earlier this year and is still waiting to hear back from him regarding a potential position.

“If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” Harbaugh said. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”

Harbaugh previously coached Kaepernick during his tenure with the 49ers and has been an avid supporter of his former QB. He even organized an open workout for Kaepernick in 2022 while he was the head coach at the University of Michigan. He did, however, decline to comment to reporters about Kaepernick’s desire to return to his playing career. Instead, he cited the former quarterback’s civil rights activism.

“I see him as a hero,” Harbaugh said. “Heroes get no days off. And he’s being a hero right now and he’s not getting any days off. It’s not for me to choose what path he takes. That’s his decision.”

Final Thoughts

For a player who was seeming ex-communicated from the NFL, it would be difficult to believe Colin Kaepernick could ever have any type of position within the league’s structure again. The NFL is highly aware of its status within society and allowing someone who has been so polarizing and divisive could go against how they want to be perceived. Maybe enough time has passed and enough of the controversy has faded from people’s memory, but it does feel a bit curious.
