The US Open defending Coco Gauff has set herself to feel the pressure before starting her way in New York. She’s already a big star who transcends her sports. She was a flag bearer alongside Dream Team star, LeBron James, at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
But, Coco Gauff had set a new motto to face the big pressure at the US Open. Gauff will defend her first and so far only Grand Slams title she had in 2023. The American will play her first match against Varvara Gracheva at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday.

It is not always easy for a defending champion to come back. However, Coco Gauff was looking forward to the increased pressure as the defending champion. “It’s a new year for a new opportunity, really excited to be back here and have a great tournament,” she said to the press before her opener in New York.
Coco Gauff is not having impressive results on the other three Grand Slams this year. She only reached the fourth round of Wimbledon earlier in the summer. Then, she has semi-final exits in both the Australian and French Open.
Obviously, coming in as defending champion is a little bit of pressure, but also more of a privilege, because as my new motto: If you defend, that means you won something before. I’m excited to be back here and hopefully have a good two weeks
Gauff also exited the third round of the Paris Olympic single match, then lost her second match in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Despite having a rough stretch of results, Coco Gauff is still trying to take the positive out of it.
The Pressure for Coco Gauff is a Real Deal
It will be interesting to see how Coco Gauff does when the lights come up at the US Open. She will start against Varvara Gracheva, who lost in the first round the last two years in New York.
Chris Evert, the six-time US Open champion, stated that the expectation for Coco Gauff is extremely high. “Everybody, from day 1, has been thinking about Coco: ‘She’s the next Serena Williams. She’s going to be the next person to dominate,” Evert – not an ESPN analyst – said.
Coco Gauff’s US teammate at the Olympics, Emma Navarro also felt the tension. “She’s getting constant attention, all the time. I have a lot of respect for her and how she handles that,” Navarro said.
Coco Gauff Could Face the Most Scrutiny of Anyone
Coco Gauff won the trophy last year, becoming the first American woman to win the singles title since Sloane Stephens in 2017. “I think the start of one just gives you a taste and gives you the belief that you can do it again,” she said.
It won’t be an easy journey for her at this year’s US Open edition. If she could pass Varvara Gracheva, she could potentially face Elina Svitolina in the third round. After that, she would face Emma Navarro in the fourth. But she will have the raucous crows on her side, and she knows what it takes to win in New York.
