Cleveland Cavaliers Fire Head Coach After Losing in Round 2

Former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, JB Bickerstaff

Shortly after the Cleveland Cavaliers got eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the NBA Playoffs, talks arose about the future of head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. J.B. Bickerstaff has had a unique coaching career with many teams as an associate coach and head coach. Various media sources even said that the Cavaliers like Bickerstaff. Sadly, for Cavs fans, he was dismissed from his duties earlier today.

What’s Next For The Cleveland Cavaliers?

ESPN analyst Adrian Wojnarowski reported the firing earlier today. It’s a bit unclear to predict what’s next for the Cleveland Cavaliers and their coaching future, as there are slim pickings in available head coaches. Maybe the Cleveland Cavaliers hire someone internally to fill the coaching vacancy.

They’re also dealing with the possibility of trading their guard Donovan Mitchell. They could even trade Darius Garland since the chemistry between him and Donovan Mitchell hasn’t produced as well as their front office intended.

J.B. Bickerstaff’s Time In Cleveland

Bickerstaff had a solid coaching career in his five seasons as the Cavaliers’ head coach. J.B. Bickerstaff went 170-159 in the regular season, along with back-to-back playoff appearances. It’s a confusing decision to many as to why Bickerstaff was dismissed from his duties.

The Cavaliers may be in a win-now type of mentality but can be rushing it. They have a solid core of young players, and the addition of Donovan Mitchell helped them well. The Cleveland Cavaliers could use some better chemistry and Bickerstaff wasn’t known to make idiotic decisions.

This could be a situation where the Cleveland Cavaliers have pushed the red button too soon. They dealt with several injuries in the playoffs, which hindered their ability to defeat the Boston Celtics. So it’s more than likely they’re pushing the red button too soon and not trusting the process like the 76ers. They’re not in need of a rebuild right now, yet the decision is a head-scratching one.

Some people are predicting that he go to the Los Angeles Lakers since that’s the hottest coaching vacancy out right now. More than likely, we’ll see J.J. Redick take that spot, but who knows? Bickerstaff has more coaching experience and still has a lot of coaching youth left in him as he’s only 44 years old.

It would work well for Bickerstaff as he gets to potentially coach LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Lakers also have some things they need to work on regarding their perimeter defense and outside shooting. J.B. Bickerstaff could definitely help with improving those two facets of the Lakers.

It’s also possible for Bickerstaff to be an assistant coach to a younger team that needs someone who’s experienced but also youthful on the coaching side. Maybe he goes to the Hornets, 76ers, Rockets, or even the Indiana Pacers. This will be an interesting offseason for Bickerstaff and the future of his coaching career.
