At the start of the New Year, people make resolutions and strive to improve in many different ways. This holds true for NBA basketball teams as well. They set goals for the year and undergo evaluations on both team and personal levels. However, most people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions or reach their goals. But that is not the case with the Cleveland Cavaliers, who seem to have embraced the ‘New Year, New Me’ mentality by having an exceptional start to the New Year.
The Old Cavs vs. the New Cavs
Before the start of the New Year, the Cleveland Cavaliers had a decent record of 18-14. Between the start of the New Year and the all-star break, their record is 18-3, which makes their overall record for the season 36-17. At home, they are 10-1, and away, they are 8-2. The Cavs not only managed to move up to 2nd place in the Eastern Conference, but also tied the season record for the longest win streak at 9.
Can The Cavs Keep Their Momentum?
The All-Star break is like an in-season timeout that gives players time to rest, recover, and strategize. A break like this can be bad for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Often, when a team is playing really well, coaches call timeouts to help their team regroup but also to slow down and break the momentum of the other team that is on a hot streak.
If the Cavs are not careful, then this All-Star break could bring an end to the momentum they have built starting in the New Year. Not only is it possible for their momentum to be stopped, but they will also be facing teams that are rested and regrouped. So, the competition will be even tougher than before.
How The All-Star Break Can Help The Cavs
Ultimately, the All-Star break can be used as a great opportunity for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs’ momentum was already slowed down in their loss against the 76ers, which snapped their 9-game winning streak. The game against the 76ers was the second-to-last game going into the all-star break. With that being said, the Cavs could use this all-star break to recover from that loss. That way, they can continue with the ‘New Year, New Me’ mentality for the rest of the season.
