The Cleveland Browns are looking to wrap up their 53-man roster, and there’s some encouraging news about key players returning from injury. Head Coach Kevin Stefanski said that OT Jack Conklin, S D’Anthony Bell, DT Dalvin Tomlinson, CB Greg Newsome II, TE David Njoku, RB Pierre Strong Jr., LB Jordan Hicks, and LB Tony Fields II will all practice this week. There’s a lot of excitement in the air this week, especially with the roster cutdown deadline just around the corner.
Cleveland Browns Conklin’s Return
Conklin’s return from PUP is a reason for excitement. OT Jack Conklin has been out with an ACL tear since Week 1 of the 2023 season. His return in the offseason could strengthen the line quite a bit and give the team some much-needed depth as they head into next season.
Along with Conklin, Stefanski said T. Jedrick Wills Jr. also will come off the PUP list but won’t practice immediately. T James Hudson III, who went down in the recent game, will work this week. Robinson will not join them on the practice field, however, nor will RB D’Onta Foreman, RB Nyheim Hines, or CB Denzel Ward.
With the deadline looming for the 53-man roster, Stefanski is forced into making some tough decisions. He mentioned how hard it was to let go of guys that showed lots of promise. Though tough decisions had to be made, Stefanski continued to be supportive and optimistic about the future of the team.
Browns Practice Squad and Roster Rules
After the deadline, the Cleveland Browns will start to form their practice squad. Recent changes enable a practice squad of 16 players and the capability of elevating two players each week without cutting a player from the 53-man active roster. This really will help teams deal with injuries and player development throughout the year.
Even with these roster moves, the Cleveland Browns are focused on their Week 1 game against the Cowboys on September 8. Stefanski put a premium on making the most out of practice time leading up to the opener. With these changes taking hold, attention will focus on how well Conklin and the returning players fare. Their return to action may just be the difference-maker this season for the Browns.
In conclusion, the Cleveland Browns are making key adjustments as they fill out their roster for the season. Combining a healthy core of important players with that, this team is looking pretty good for the early parts of the season. Coach Stefanski and the Browns have used every practice day to get ready for the 2024 season.
