The Cincinnati Bengals signed backup Quarterback Jake Browning to a two-year contract extension on Tuesday morning that takes him through the 2025 season. Browning filled in admirably for Quarterback Joe Burrow who was limited to 10 games last season. Browning had 12 touchdown passes and seven interceptions last season.

Browning went undrafted in 2019 out of the University of Washington. He spent the first two years of his career on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad before spending 2021 and 2022 on the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals. Browning got his chance in the NFL last season and he made the most of it. He will now have two more years on one of the best teams in the National Football League.
The former Washington Husky could also find himself on another team if a quarterback were to go down with an injury during either training camp or the regular season. Browning proved during his nine games last season that he is one of the league’s top backup quarterbacks.
Cincinnati Bengals 2024 Expectations
The Bengals finished last season with a record of 9-8, and Browning had them in the NFL Playoff picture until the last few weeks of the regular season. Cincinnati’s championship aspirations came crashing down when it was announced that Burrow would be unable to play again following week 10 against the Baltimore Ravens. Burrow needs to get through an NFL Training Camp healthy this year, something he has been unable to do during his career.
Cincinnati will need a healthy Burrow to have any chance of competing in the extremely tough AFC North and an AFC that is as strong as ever.
Cincinnati has not had a great NFL Offseason as key members of the defense left due to salary cap constraints including Safety Jessie Bates III. Burrow signed a lucrative contract last offseason and star Wide Receiver Ja’Marr Chase is expected to sign a contract extension before the regular season that will make him the highest paid receiver the league.
Browning provides the Cincinnati Bengals with one of the best insurance policies for the league, and also one they hope to never have to use.
