Cincinnati Bengals Jermaine Burton Voices Frustration With His Role In The Offense

Cincinnati Bengals Jermaine Burton

The Cincinnati Bengals have been known to get off to slow starts. They need to snap out of their slump, or they may find themselves outside of the playoffs this season. While the defense has been suspect, the offense has also not lived up to expectations, given the talent they have. Anytime good teams start losing, players often voice frustrations through the media. Wide receiver Jermaine Burton is not happy with his role in the offense and he let reporters know about it this week.

Cincinnati Bengals Jermain Burton On His Role

Jermain Burton was a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. It isn’t a surprise that he is behind Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on the depth chart. However, he has only been able to catch two passes for 88 yards this season. Andrei Iosivas and Trenton Irwin are outproducing him this season for the Cincinnati Bengals. Iosivas especially seems to have solidified the WR3 spot. Burton spent a few minutes expressing his frustration with reporters.

“I can’t put myself in the game. Personally, I feel like I could have been [making] plays.”

Burton has been a topic of conversation this week for many players on the Cincinnati Bengals. Quarterback Joe Burrow had this to say about the rookie out of Alabama.

“He played great last week [against the Philadelphia Eagles]. He will take the next step with his knowledge of the game plan, his knowledge of the defense, his knowledge of the offense, the minute details of each route. I think Jermaine’s going to be a really good player.”

The comments from Burrow and the rest of the team indicate they are high on Jermaine Burton’s potential. However, he needs to show more in practice. Many rookies are very raw when they come into the league and need time to learn the playbook. This seems to be the case with Burton; he needs to continue working hard at practice.

Playoff Chances

The good news for the Cincinnati Bengals is they are not out of the playoffs by any means. ESPN gives them a 28% chance of making the playoffs in the AFC. Their division is tough, which makes their path harder than most. However, the Broncos and the Chargers are currently in the playoffs, and neither of those teams has looked dominant this season. When the NFL added the additional team to the playoffs, it made it easier for teams to recover from a slow start.

They still have two games against the Steelers and one against the Ravens on the schedule. However, there are also very winnable games like the Raiders, Titans, and Cowboys. The Cincinnati Bengals also have the Broncos and Chargers on the schedule, and they are chasing a playoff spot. The hope is the offense can find a better rhythm. Maybe Jermaine Burton will be a second-half star, and the team can sneak into the playoffs. Things need to change fast, or this team will have many questions heading into the offseason.
