Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing Team Principal, has raised doubts about whether the team can ‘trust’ some of their tools given that they have noticed certain anomalies in their data since the latter part of the 2023 Formula One season. Red Bull started its title defense well by winning the first seven out of ten Grand Prix races, but in the last six races, they have not triumphed since the Spanish GP in June.
Christian Horner: Issues With Trust
The current world champions have experienced a string of problems related to the balance and mechanics of their RB20 car, and they have not found the solutions to this problem. Despite the number of changes over the last several months, its performance has been rather erratic. Such concerns were reflected in Max Verstappen’s 6th place in the Italian GP at Monza and Sergio Perez’s 8th place; at the same time, it is possible to note that traditional problems of the team persisted.
Christian Horner acknowledged that the team has been aware of these problems for some time, noting that the issues can be traced back to the start of 2024 and even the previous season’s United States Grand Prix; he stated that
“I think it’s been there for some time, I think actually really going through the data there were issues there at the beginning of the year in the characteristics,” Horner said.
Challenges with Upgrades and Car Balance

Christian Horner pointed out that recent upgrades have exacerbated the car’s balance issues, leading to a disconnect between the front and rear of the vehicle. This mismatch has made it challenging for the team to rely on their data tools; he mentioned that,
I think that recent upgrades, whilst it put load on the car, it’s disconnected the front and rear. We can see that, our wind tunnel doesn’t say that, but the track says that. So it’s getting on top of that, because obviously when you have that it means you can’t trust your tools, so then you have to go back to track data and previous experience.
It is more important that these failures have impacted the tussle for the championship standings. Verstappen, who arrived at the Hungarian GP with a massive 105-point lead in the drivers’ championship, saw his advantage cut to a mere 62 points with eight grand prix races left on the calendar. Also, there is the fact that the gap separating the Red Bull team from McLaren in the constructors’ standings is only eight points now. After the race in Italy, Verstappen said that both championships are on the line if the team doesn’t improve its performance.
Focus on Upcoming Races and Solutions
Christian Horner accepted the fact that there was considerable pressure to change the situation and emphasized that the problems have to be diagnosed. As per Christian Horner, time management is the key factor because there is a two-week break between the races in Baku and Singapore, as well as another brief break before the Austin GP. The following period will be crucial for Red Bull since they will try to return to power and fight for the title.
