More recently, Chris Eubank Jr. recently revealed the reasons why his scheduled fight against Canelo Alvarez did not materialize last month. Speaking to Boxing News in an exclusive interview, Eubank explained the issues that could not be resolved by the two teams, which finally caused the breakdown of the fight plan.
Canelo Fight Talks Break Down
The would-be challenger, Chris Eubank, 35, had been negotiating to fight the unified super-middleweight champion in Las Vegas, a fight much anticipated by fans. But the two sides could not reach an understanding. They were supposed to fight against each other, but Alvarez fought against Edgar Berlanga, who got outpointed in what many consider a valuable lesson. Eubank decided that the terms of the deal offered to him never really made sense for someone of his standing.
Chris Eubank Focus on Fair Deals and Ring Readiness
Chris Eubank remained coy in particular about the fact that he still wants that match against Canelo Alvarez. Of course, only if it is under favorable terms. One problem was the financial offer; the other problem was his willingness to get in the ring with the star. He stated that
“So that was one issue. Another issue was, and the most important issue, I’ve been out of the ring for a year. I’m not just going in there. I’m going in there to beat Canelo. I’m not going in there to you know, just make up one of his shows like so many other guys do. Get a bit of money and bounce. No, I want that guy scalped.”
Chris Eubank was also concerned that facing a fighter of Canelo’s quality after such a long layoff would not be a prudent move at all. His target is to be a hundred percent ready to face the clash against the four-division world champion. Although Chris Eubank himself has targeted Canelo as his potential opponent, he understands that he has yet to become a top contender for such a fight. He is expected to compete against Polish contender Kamil Szeremeta on October 12 in Riyadh as part of the seven-fight card topped by the light-heavyweight championship fight between Beterbiev and Bivol. He mentioned that
“You don’t take a guy scalped like that after being inactive for a year. I’m not thirsty for money, so I don’t need to jump when you put the number in front of me. There’s only a few guys that you [Canelo] can fight. I know that fight’s going to be there next year. And by next year, I would have had two, three fights under my belt. I will be on a routine, I’ll be on a schedule, I’ll have my momentum, and then I’ll go and take him out.”
Final Thoughts
Chris Eubank’s primary goal is to get back to the fight game and with that upcoming fight against Szeremeta. Though the fight with Canelo did not occur this year, Chris Eubank is set to battle the Mexican iron-chinned sensation soon. Eubanks will be ready to make a statement next year.
