The Kansas City Chiefs have seen their share of drama since winning the Super Bowl two months ago.
Voters rejected a sales tax hike to pay for a renovated Arrowhead Stadium. The father of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes is facing 10 years in prison after being indicted on a third DWI arrest. Wide receiver Rashee Rice was found to be the driver of one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash in Dallas.
And now, Dallas police have stated that there was 10.8 grams of marijuana found in the Lamborghini that Rice was driving. That amount is a felony in Texas, which carries a punishment that includes jail time.
Chiefs receiver in hot water
Rice, who left the scene of Saturday’s accident, was driving one of the vehicles that caused the crash. The accident included the Lamborghini Urus SUV, a Chevrolet Corvette, and four other vehicles. Four people sustained minor injuries, according to the Dallas police.
The rookie wideout that played for Kansas City in the Super Bowl, “made a mistake,” according to his lawyer, Royce West. West, a Texas state senator, told reporters Thursday that Rice will:
“Do everything in his power to bring their life back to as normal as possible in terms of injuries, in terms of property damage.”
The investigation is ongoing. Rice admitted in an Instagram post that he was taking “full responsibility” for his role in the accident.
Chiefs in limbo as Rice faces possible jail time
It is not yet known what punishment Rice will receive for the accident itself. However, the amount of marijuana found in the vehicle adds a new layer to the trouble he faces.
In Texas, possession of more than four grams of marijuana is a felony. State law notes a mandatory minimum sentence of 180 days up to two years behind bars, as well as a maximum fine of $10,000. That doesn’t include any possible sanctions from the NFL.
This leaves the Chiefs in a pickle regarding whether Rice will be able to play next season. The 23-year-old caught 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in the 2023 campaign.
