Kansas City Chiefs Waive QB Ian Book As Final Roster Looms Heading Into 2024 NFL Season

Ian Book

Ahead of the Tuesday, August 28 Cut Day deadline, the Kansas City Chiefs waived quarterback Ian Book from the roster, as announced by NFL insider Tom Pelissero via X. The Chiefs now look to head into the season with quarterbacks remaining on their roster heading into the 2024 NFL season.

Book entered the NFL during the 2021 Draft, coming in as a fourth-round pick at No. 133 by the New Orleans Saints. He finished his collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame with 8,948 passing yards and 72 touchdowns over five years with the Fighting Irish. Unfortunately, Book’s career with the Saints did not pan out as he would have hoped. After just one season with the team, he was waived.

Book then spent the next two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots before finally landing with the Chiefs.

Ian Book with the Chiefs

Book joined the Chiefs in January on a future/reserve contract. The plan for Book was to serve as the backup to Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz. During preseason action, he was a bright spot for the team, finishing the preseason by completing 16-of-22 passes for 133 yards, two touchdowns, and posting a 118.2 passer rating.

While his performances didn’t translate into any wins for the Chiefs, Book still showed other NFL teams what he is capable of when given the opportunity.

What’s Next for Ian Book?

Now that Book is officially gone from Kansas City, some might wonder what’s next for him. Book showed some impressive flashes during the preseason, as evidenced by his numbers, which could likely secure him a spot with another NFL team.

At just 26 years old, and with the importance of having solid depth at every position, there’s a good chance one of the 32 teams will take a chance on him. Book could serve as a serviceable backup to their starting quarterback.

Final Thoughts

With Book gone, the Chiefs are likely to roll with what they currently have in their quarterback room: Mahomes as the starter and Wentz and Chris Oladokun as backups. These backups likely won’t see much action throughout the season, but with the unpredictable and harsh nature of an NFL season, one can never know how things might play out. The Chiefs have made their choice, keeping the players they feel gives them the best chance at bringing home another Lombardi this season.

With the odds currently set for the Chiefs at +550 according to FanDuel to win the Superbowl for the third straight season, it would be a historic feat not only for the franchise and its fans but for the entire NFL if they manage to pull it off.
