The Kansas City Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowl titles. Their most recent championship took place last season in 2023 with a victory over the San Francisco 49ers. While most eyes are placed on Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, other position groups play a huge role in winning games and championships as well.
Placekicker Harrison Butker and the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed on a new contract extension. This is a record breaking deal for Butker that will keep him with the Chiefs through the 2028 NFL season. He will play for approximately four more seasons in the organization as he began his stint with the team back in 2017.

Harrison Butker’s new contract will consist of a four-year deal worth $25.6 million. Throughout that time he will receive $17.8 million in guaranteed money with the Kansas City Chiefs. This will make Butker the highest paid placekicker in the NFL. His extension passes up a previous $24 million contract that was signed by Baltimore Ravens kicker, Justin Tucker in 2022.
The 29-year-old placekicker has a field goal percentage of 89.1. His percentage of extra points exceeds his field goal statistics to this point at 94.6%. Last season in 2023, he made a career-long 57-yarder against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVII. Butker only missed on two field goal attempts going 33-35 when he ran out on a football field whether in a road or home game last season.
He is very deserving of his new deal as he has been a reliable teammate in helping the Kansas City Chiefs secure three Super Bowl victories in the last four years.
New 2024 Kickoff Rules
Starting this season in 2024, the National Football League has changed kickoff rules for safety purposes. In hopes of seeing more returns, players on both sides must line up five yards apart from one another. After the kickoff returner catches the football, contact can be made between both teams.
As the ball is kicked, the placeholder must exit the field. This will leave that position player out of any further contact or tackling that will go on downfield. Some NFL fans are in favor of the new rules that have been made, but it is something that athletes or spectators are not accustomed to. One preseason game has shown what the different rule looks like.
It could prevent further injuries as players are running full speed during kickoffs and punt returns. In the coming weeks, everyone will get an opportunity to see more of the new kickoff system as the 2024 season begins on Thursday in Week 1 of preseason play.
Kansas City Chiefs 2024 Season
The Chiefs will want to repeat their recent success with another championship in 2024. Patrick Mahomes is known to be the best quarterback in this generation of NFL players. His throwing accuracy and scrambling ability make him dangerous for opposing defenses and has since being drafted seven seasons ago.
Travis Kelce has been in recent news involving other things besides professional football. But, he will obviously be another key piece as Mahomes’ top target yet again. His touchdown numbers were on the low side with only eight total touchdowns at his position. Kelce was not far from reaching 1,000 receiving yards but came up short of that mark with 985 yards.
The team looks to continue their quest for another Super Bowl appearance and a chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy again at the start of 2025 in February. The Chiefs will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 10th at 7:00 pm on NFL Network.
