Kansas City Chiefs Cut TE Peyton Hendershot

Kansas City Chiefs cut ties with Peyton Hendershot

The Kansas City Chiefs have parted ways with tight end Peyton Hendershot. This move comes after Hendershot and the Chiefs were fined for his involvement in an altercation during Week 2. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Hendershot was fined $5,472 for pushing Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith after Smith knocked Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes out of bounds. The Chiefs also incurred a $100,000 fine for the incident, leading to Hendershot’s release.

Hendershot, who joined the Chiefs from the Dallas Cowboys via trade, heads to waivers without playing a game for Kansas City. Dallas had traded him at the roster cut-down deadline in exchange for a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick. However, since Hendershot never met the conditions for the Cowboys to receive the pick, Kansas City retains it. Hendershot’s stint with the Chiefs was brief but costly.

The altercation that led to Hendershot’s fines occurred late in the fourth quarter of the Chiefs Week 2 matchup against the Ravens. After Mahomes was pushed out of bounds by Smith, Hendershot retaliated by shoving the linebacker, leading to immediate penalties and, ultimately, fines for both Hendershot and the Chiefs. The NFL had previously warned teams about the consequences for non-active players causing disruptions from the sidelines, a rule Hendershot violated.

This incident not only drew attention but also influenced the Chiefs’ decision to part ways with the 25-year-old tight end. Despite being active in Week 2, Hendershot only saw the field on special teams and was not utilized in the offensive rotation. The Chiefs likely expected more from the player they traded for, but his costly mistake and lack of impact on the field sealed his fate.

Trade Details and Waiver Implications

Hendershot was acquired from the Cowboys just before the start of the 2024 season in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick. Dallas would have received the pick if Hendershot had been on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster for five games or the 46-man gameday roster for three games. However, since neither condition was met, the Chiefs retain the draft pick, while Hendershot heads to waivers.

The trade appeared to have potential, as the Chiefs were looking to add depth to their tight end room. However, Hendershot’s lack of playing time and off-the-field incident left the Chiefs with no choice but to move on. His release means that other teams now have the opportunity to claim him off waivers, but his recent actions may impact his chances of finding a new home quickly.

Final Thoughts

Hendershot’s short time in Kansas City will be remembered more for the fines than for any on-field contributions. The Chiefs made a low-risk trade to add him as a depth piece, but his sideline outburst and failure to meet expectations led to an early exit. Despite being a promising young player, Hendershot’s stint in Kansas City ended before it truly began.

As the Chiefs move forward, they’ll look to fill the gap left by Hendershot’s departure, though his role was minimal. With tight ends like Travis Kelce leading the charge, Kansas City remains strong at the position. However, Hendershot’s release serves as a reminder that discipline on and off the field is critical in the NFL.
