The Kansas City Chiefs have acquired tight end Peyton Hendershot from the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 conditional seventh-round pick, as reported by Tom Pelissero via X.
Despite the Chiefs already having three tight ends on the roster and recently waiving another tight end, the team looks to bring in Hendershot. In addition to being a tight end, Hendershot has a good amount of experience on special teams with the Dallas Cowboys which might have influenced Brett Veach’s decision to make this move.
Who Is Peyton Hendershot?

Hendershot is originally from Lizton, Indiana, and attended Tri-West High School, where he played for their football team. He was a major contributor to their success in winning the 2014 3A state championship. He finished his high school career with 157 catches for 2,170 yards and 22 touchdowns, earning All-County, All-Conference, and 6A All-State honors.
Hendershot then accepted a football scholarship to play for Indiana University Bloomington. As a true freshman in 2017, he played in four games as the backup tight end before suffering a season-ending injury and becoming a medical redshirt. Over the years, Hendershot improved and proved his abilities to his teammates and coaching staff, leading to more opportunities on the field. By the end of his collegiate career in 2022, he had tallied 136 receptions for 1,479 yards and 14 touchdowns in 32 games played.
Peyton Hendershot’s Time in the NFL
Hendershot entered the 2022 NFL Draft but went undrafted. He was eventually signed by the Cowboys and made the initial 53-man roster as the team’s third-string tight end. He scored his first professional touchdown in Week 7 of 2022 against the Detroit Lions and appeared in all 17 games that season.
In 2023, Hendershot suffered an ankle injury in Week 3, putting him on injured reserve until December 6, when he returned and played in eight games. He recorded four receptions for 38 yards. While Hendershot’s time with the Cowboys was not glamorous due to his backup role, he finished his tenure with the team with 11 receptions, 103 yards, and one touchdown in 17 games played.
With the news breaking today, the Cowboys waived Hendershot, and the Chiefs picked him up.
What to Expect from Peyton Hendershot on the Chiefs
With the Chiefs appearing to have solidified their tight end room, especially after waiving Irv Smith Jr., the question remains: what role will Peyton Hendershot have with the Chiefs?
The answer seems tied to his special teams experience, which was evident during his time with Dallas. In 2022, Hendershot played 297 snaps on special teams, followed by 103 in 2023. Chiefs fans should expect to see him utilized in various ways by special teams coordinator Dave Toub on that side of the ball.
Final Thoughts
Veach continues to make moves as he finalizes the Chiefs’ 53-man roster ahead of the regular season. While Veach may not be known for making big-name signings or acquisitions, he consistently finds ways to tweak the roster around the edges, finding the right players to add to the team. More often than not, these moves pay dividends down the road for the Chiefs.
