Kansas City Chiefs Remain Undefeated After Dominant Win Over 49ers

Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, New Orleans Saints

The Kansas City Chiefs continued their dominant run, securing a  28-18 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on the road. The Chiefs moved to 6-0 on the season, remaining the NFL’s last undefeated team. A mix of defensive stops, timely interceptions, and key offensive plays led the Chiefs to this important win.

Patrick Mahomes had another rollercoaster performance, throwing two interceptions but also adding a rushing touchdown to extend the Chiefs’ lead late in the game. Despite their struggles, the offense reached their highest point total of the season. Kansas City’s defense continued to rise to the occasion, forcing three turnovers and keeping San Francisco’s offense in check throughout the matchup.

Chiefs Defense Sets the Tone Early

The Chiefs defense started strong, forcing a three-and-out on the 49ers’ opening drive. Kansas City’s offense, however, couldn’t capitalize, going seven plays for 30 yards before turning the ball over on downs at their own 45-yard line. Safety Justin Reid intercepted Brock Purdy on the next play, giving the Chiefs offense another chance at the 42-yard line.

Despite the momentum from the turnover, the Chiefs’ offense stalled again. Patrick Mahomes threw his seventh interception of the season, as defensive tackle Kalia Davis deflected the ball and hauled in the pick. The 49ers took over but couldn’t build on it, as Kansas City’s defense once again forced a three-and-out.

After the 49ers punted, Mahomes was sacked for the second time in the quarter, and the Chiefs punted back. With both defenses stepping up, San Francisco eventually broke the deadlock with a 55-yard field goal by kicker Andres Carlson, giving them a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter.

Kansas City’s Offense Finds Its Rhythm

The second quarter saw Kansas City’s offense come alive. A 70-yard drive capped off by a Kareem Hunt 1-yard touchdown run allowed the Chiefs to take a 7-3 lead with 11:24 remaining. The Chiefs’ defense continued its stellar performance, forcing another 49ers punt after a quick three-and-out.

Mecole Hardman then electrified the crowd with a 55-yard punt return, setting Kansas City up in great field position at San Francisco’s 30-yard line. The Chiefs made the most of it, going 30 yards in seven plays before Hunt scored his second touchdown of the day. Harrison Butker’s extra point extended the lead to 14-3 with just over six minutes left in the second quarter.

As halftime approached, George Karlaftis recorded his second sack of the season, forcing another punt from the 49ers. San Francisco got on the board with a 24-yard field goal before halftime, trimming the Chiefs’ lead to 14-6. Kansas City would receive the ball to start the third quarter.

Chiefs Seal the Win Despite Turnovers

Mahomes opened the third quarter by throwing his second interception of the day after Xavier Worthy slipped on his route. The 49ers capitalized on the short field, scoring a touchdown but missing the extra point, keeping Kansas City ahead 14-12. The Chiefs quickly responded with Mahomes orchestrating a 79-yard drive, highlighted by his career-long 33-yard run.

Mahomes capped the drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown to give the Chiefs a 21-12 lead with 14:13 left in the fourth quarter. The defense kept the pressure on as safety Jaden Hicks intercepted Purdy in the endzone for his third interception of the game.

George Karlaftis continued to disrupt Purdy’s rhythm, pressuring the quarterback into poor decisions throughout the game. Mecole Hardman sealed the victory on the next offensive series with an 18-yard jet sweep touchdown, finishing a 12-play, 80-yard drive. Butker’s extra point put the game out of reach, making it 28-12. Then, in the final three minutes, the 49ers secured a late-game garbage time touchdown, but the game was already over.

Final Thoughts

Kansas City’s defense was the driving force behind their sixth consecutive victory. Three interceptions, including a critical one in the end zone by Jaden Hicks, ensured that the 49ers couldn’t keep up despite Mahomes’ turnovers. The pass rush, led by George Karlaftis, also played a huge role in limiting San Francisco’s offense.

Kansas City’s defense continues to prove that it can carry the team. The Chiefs will look to build on this performance as they prepare for their next challenge in Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
