The Chicago White Sox set a record for futility in 2024, losing 121 games. There are thirty teams in Major League Baseball now, and the league, let’s say, has existed in that form for one hundred years. That means the White Sox had a worse season than 3,000 other seasons. The next closet was the 1962 Mets, who lost 120 games. The Mets have an excuse: it was their first year. Chicago is a great city, and it is a shame they have such a bad baseball team.
This article could be fifty thousand words, but after a quick review of the carnage, um, schedule, I will only make two points about their futility.
Chicago White Sox 2024 Schedule
The White Sox were terrible this year. It would not be a good use of space to go game by game for all 162 games of their season. Who would want to relive that? Nevertheless, some key stats from the White Sox season are worth knowing. They were an all-time worst, 41-121. They fired their manager, Pedro Grifol, in favor of Grady Sizemore near the end of the season because they could not fire all the players. They had a season-long 21-game losing streak from May 22 to June 6.
Pop Flies Should Be Outs
The White Sox made many bone-headed plays this season, causing the team to lose 121 games. The absolute worst was allowing a pop fly to drop in the infield. Eight-year-olds know that all pop flies should be caught. These are grown men and professional baseball players, for crying out loud. This travesty is worth watching.
These players should go back to Little League, where they belong. They get paid money to play like this.
Win 50 and Lose 50
Buck Showalter is famous for managing the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and New York Mets. Less known, he played for the New York Yankees international minor leagues for seven seasons. He earned a reputation for turning baseball teams around, and as a manager, he earned a reputation as a bit of a magician.
He famously quipped, “You are never as good as you look when you win, and you are never as bad as you look when you lose.” The White Sox in 2024 were bad. Period. Showalter also famously said that every Major League Baseball team wins 50 games, every Major League Baseball team loses 50 games, and it is what they do with the other 63 that matters. The White Sox of 2024 did not win 50 games, so they are probably immune to that quote.
Conclusion
There is always next year. One thing that is great about sports, in general, is optimism above all else. Nevertheless, one important fact for the White Sox does not bring optimism. Their farm system, the lifeblood of any baseball organization, is surprisingly poorly ranked. Usually, bad baseball teams have a strong farm system, but not so with the Chicago White Sox. A not-so-optimistic outlook on a terrible season.
