Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet was one of the hottest names on the MLB trade market this summer. When the trade deadline passed on Tuesday, the White Sox decided to hang onto him for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Surprisingly, the Chicago White Sox were able to hang onto him. Chicago is the worst team in the MLB this season, and they could very well be the worst team in MLB history by the time the season is over. Maybe teams did not want to give up their entire farm system for him, but who could honestly blame other teams for not wanting to trade for him?
Some teams, such as the New York Yankees, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Los Angeles Dodgers, were interested in trading for Crochet. He has pitched in 22 games so far this season for the Chicago White Sox. His record is 6-8 with a 3.23 ERA. In 114.1 innings pitched, he has given up 89 hits and 44 runs, along with 26 walks and 160 strikeouts.
Garrett Crochet has pitched with the White Sox ever since the 2020 season. He is only 25 years old. Chicago was able to trade starting pitcher Erick Fedde to the St. Louis Cardinals and outfielder Eloy Jimenez to the Baltimore Orioles.
Crochet could be the top trade target for MLB teams this offseason, other than Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. They both were not traded and were rumored to be shopped for a while. Maybe the White Sox will lower the price for Garrett Crochet this offseason, but it remains to be seen. The Chicago White Sox will not be contenders for at least a few years, so why don’t they trade him in the offseason and see what they can get for him?
MLB Analyst Thinks He’s This Offseason Top Trade Target
CBS Sports writer A.J. Anderson listed his Top 10 players who could be potentially traded this offseason in the MLB. He thinks that Garrett Crochet will be the top trade target across the league this offseason. His teammate, Luis Robert Jr., a centerfield, was ranked second on this list. Yandy Diaz, a first baseman from the Tampa Bay Rays, was ranked third on this list. Anderson said about Crochet potentially being traded this offseason:
“Whatever you make of Crochet’s reported demands, including a stipulated extension if he was going to pitch into the postseason, they should become less of a factor for teams heading forward. Provided Crochet stays healthy the rest of the way — the stated intent for those demands — he’s going to enter the offseason with a full year of starting under his belt. That development may ease (but won’t erase) the durability concerns associated with his game. Lefties with two years of team control remaining and Crochet’s kind of arsenal tend to be in high demand. Besides, the White Sox, as terrible as any team in recent memory, have no incentive to keep him into the 2025 season.”
There could be some surprise teams that will enter the Crochet sweepstakes this offseason. Maybe teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Mets, or the Milwaukee Brewers will make a pitch to trade for him. Philadelphia has a very strong rotation, but there is always a need for depth in the rotation. The Mets and the Brewers need frontline help in the starting rotation. New York and Milwaukee do not have strong rotations at all, and they are somehow in the playoff mix.
The Cleveland Guardians, the Kansas City Royals, and the Minnesota Twins could very well make the playoffs this year in the American League Central. The Chicago White Sox could be in the basement in this division for a while. This is why Chicago needs to sell as many pieces as possible this offseason and get as many prospects back into their farm system as possible moving forward.
