It is August 17th and Chicago White Sox have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. The White Sox have been the laughingstock of baseball with their 30-94 record. They are 38 games back of the 3rd American League Wild Card Spot and 42.5 games behind the first-place Cleveland Guardians.
The White Sox, being mathematically eliminated on August 17th, is the earliest a team has been out of the playoff race since the 3rd wild card spot was added in 2022. Add that to the archives of what made the 2024 season disastrous for the Chicago White Sox.
White Sox Eliminated From Playoffs…In Mid-August
The Chicago White Sox were eliminated from playoff contention Saturday after their 6-1 loss against the Houston Astros. Their 30-94 record is by far the worst in baseball. The next worst team, the Colorado Rockies, are 15 games ahead of the White Sox.
The White Sox fired manager Pedro Grifol a little over a week ago. After taking over the club in 2023, Grifol had a record of 89-190 as manager before being let go. His .319 winning percentage is the lowest from any manager in the past 80 years. That is not good folks.
To go along with this, they also have a negative run differential nearly two times as bad as any other team. It is truly pitiful how bad the 2024 White Sox are. The Sox have 38 meaningless games to go. If there are still White Sox fans out there watching every game, major props to them. That seems like a brutal task to accomplish.
The 2024 Chicago White Sox, A Complete Disaster

The 2024 Chicago White Sox is the definition of a dumpster fire. Being 64 games under .500 in mid-August is pathetic. They have had losing streaks of 14 and 21 in the same season. With 38 games remaining, would anyone be shocked if they didn’t have another losing streak reach double digits again?
At this point, Chicago is just playing for pride. But then again they were essentially just playing for pride weeks ago and still wound up losing 21 games in a row. The worst MLB record in the modern era for a 162-game season was set by the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics, with a record of 36-117. To surpass this mark, the Sox would just have to win 7 of their last 38 games. Surely that should be no problem for them! The White Sox will go for a series win against the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon. If they can take a road series from the Astros, anything is possible.
