Chicago Sky Fire Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon

The Chicago Sky fired Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon

The Chicago Sky fired head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon after one season at the helm. Chicago went 13-27 this season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018. Weatherspoon was an assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans before getting the head coaching job in Chicago.

Weatherspoon is a Hall of Famer and a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year but there was a disconnect between staff and players. Sky co-owner Nadia Rawlinson said in a statement “After careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the organization to part ways with head coach Teresa Weatherspoon.”

As players found out the news of the firing of their coach there were some heartbreaking reactions around the team. Starting with star rookie Angel Reese. She reacted to the news of the letting go of Weatherspoon. Reese said “I am heartbroken, I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you.”

Chennedy Carter also had something to say on her Instagram about the firing of Sky’s head coach. “Spoon you are appreciated. Lady, don’t ya know we love ya?” Carter wrote this on her Instagram story, which had Tupac’s “Dear Mama” playing in the background.

For Weatherspoon, it wasn’t just the bad record that played a factor in the decision for her to be fired. It was also the fact the Chicago Sky had the second-worst offense in the league with a 97.0 rating. The Sky took the fewest three-point attempts per game (14.9). The team also had struggles with closing out games when having the lead.

What Led To This Decision

However, some factors were out of Weatherspoon’s control. Before coaching the team, they had a poor roster and management issues. Marina Mabrey was traded away during the season and Kahleah Cooper was traded before the season started. It seems a bit harsh the way the Chicago Sky’s upper management has handled the situation by letting go of a coach after just one year on the job.

Since the Chicago Sky has made its bed by letting go of Weatherspoon, they will begin the hunt for a new coach this offseason. There will be a major turnover in the roster this offseason along with a lottery selection for the WNBA Draft. The Chicago Sky will not get the number one overall pick due to the fact they owe the Dallas Wings a pick swap this year.
