The Chicago Cubs head into the All-Star break on a bit of a hot streak. They ended the first half of the year 5-2 with wins against the Orioles and Cardinals. However, they still have lots of teams to jump in the standings. They are last in the NL Central, sitting at 8.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers. In the Wild Card race, they currently sit 3.5 games back but have six teams to leapfrog to nab a spot. It puts them in an odd position at the trade deadline. Should they be buyers or sellers? One MLB analyst thinks they should be trying to win now.
Chicago Cubs Urged To Be Buyers At Trade Deadline
While things look dire in the standings, there is still a lot of season to go. While the division will be tough to take, a Wild Card spot is definitely in play. If the Chicago Cubs can go on a hot streak, they could easily skyrocket up the standings. MLB Network analyst Jon Heyman urged the team to go for it and be buyers at the deadline.
“They better be non-sellers. They’ve got to be buyers at this point. I mean, they are the Cubs. They are the third-biggest market. They have the revenue; it’s high. We talk about this a lot. They’re in the race. I know they haven’t been great this year, but they showed something at the end. They beat up on the Orioles. Good for them. They are much better than they’ve shown over the first half. I do believe they should be buyers.”
It isn’t just about where the team is in the standings for Heyman. The Chicago Cubs are one of the most recognizable brands in baseball. They should splurge and go for it. This team has had their struggles but they also have dealt with injuries. If key players can return, the team could sneak into the playoffs. As we have seen in past years, once a team is in, anything can happen.
Who Should They Go Get?
It’s easy to say a team needs to be a buyer, but who should they actually look at getting? Catcher is one position they could use a massive upgrade and reports indicate they could go after Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen. Toronto is one of the teams many believe will be huge sellers at the deadline. Many of their players have been involved in trade rumors. They have been linked to some bigger names as well.
The New York Mets have decisions to make about their players like Pete Alonso. Many have called on the Chicago Cubs to go and get the slugging first basemen at the trade deadline. It is unclear how available he is, but the team is likely checking into all options.
It remains to be seen if the Chicago Cubs will actually be buyers. They could decide to go the other way and sell off their assets and look toward the future. They are one of many teams who have a decision to make in the next few weeks and it will be interesting to see where the top players end up going at the trade deadline.
