Report: Chicago Bulls Josh Giddey Looking For Massive Contract

Chicago Bulls Josh Giddey

The Chicago Bulls made a big splash this offseason when they traded for Josh Giddey. The Oklahoma City Thunder have a glut of young talent and Giddey wasn’t meshing with their current core. Chicago sent Alex Caruso to the Thunder and received the 22-year-old Australian. As he enters the final year of his rookie deal, extension talks could begin soon. He is reportedly looking for a massive pay raise.

Chicago Bulls Josh Giddey Looking For $30 Million Per Year

The Chicago Bulls will have to pay up if they want to keep Josh Giddey. NBA insider Jake Fischer reported he is seeking a new contract that has a minimum of $30 million per year. He would, of course, look for more depending on how he performs in Chicago this year. The number isn’t pulled out of thin air. Many young players are using the contract the Toronto Raptors gave Immanuel Quickley. He signed a five-year, $175 million deal this past summer. The Bulls traded for him, hoping for him to become the new cornerstone of the franchise.

Josh Giddey played a limited role on the Thunder. He averaged 13.0 points, 5.7 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game. His shooting numbers were slightly concerning. He only hits 31% of his three-pointers, which is a huge part of today’s NBA. The good news for Giddey is his role will expand with the Chicago Bulls. In Oklahoma City, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the primary ball-handler, and much of the offense ran through him. In Chicago, Giddey will have an opportunity to be the focal point of the offense alongside Coby White.

Season Outlook

The Chicago Bulls are in a tricky spot. They have made questionable moves over the past half-decade, leaving them with some aging superstars on massive contracts. Zach LaVine was reportedly on the trade block last year, but no one wanted him. He still has three years left on his deal, with a cap hit of $48 million in the last year. One positive for the Bulls is the play of Coby White. The former lottery pick finally showed some signs of becoming an all-star caliber player. The team hopes that the combination of White and Josh Giddey will become the future of the franchise.

The team finished 39-43 last season and finished in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. There is a lot of work to do, but this year could be the start of something new. If the young stars can start to show some promise, things may be looking up for a franchise that has a rich history but hasn’t been able to be competitive for years.
