Chicago Blackhawks 2024-2025: Defense Preview

Chicago

The Chicago Blackhawks had a massive offseason in terms of roster turnover and signing new and better players for the 2024-2025 season, and the defense has had a big change going into the new season.

Let’s look at what has changed and what has not for the blue line for the Blackhawks this upcoming season.

The Players Who’ve Stayed with the Blackhawks

Alex Vlasic Blackhawks

One thing that isn’t changing in Chicago is seemingly the top paring on defense, Seth Jones and Alex Vlasic are locked up on long-term deals now in Chicago. Seth Jones was brought over from Columbus before the 2021-22 in a massive trade, he was immediately signed to an 8-year, $76,000,000 contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, and an average annual salary of $9,500,000. In 2024-25, Jones has a cap hit of $9,500,000.

Meanwhile, this offseason Alex Vlasic Alex Vlasic signed a 6-year, $27.6 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, an average annual value of $4.6 million, and runs through the 2029-30 season. Connor Murphy has been a staple of the Blackhawks since being traded in 2017 from Arizona to Chicago, Murphy is an assistant captain with the Blackhawks, he signed a 4 year, $17.6 million contract extension with the Blackhawks in 2021, he’s the longest-tenured Blackhawks player on the roster.

It’s unknown if Kevin Korchinski is going to start the season in the NHL but he’s entering his 2nd season with the Chicago Blackhawks, Korchinski was drafted 7th overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and played 76 games last season as a rookie. Louis Crevier and Isaak Phillips both signed new deals with the Blackhawks this offseason and both could potentially be in the mix for roster spots this upcoming season.

The Players Who’ve Joined the Blackhawks Defense

The Blackhawks brought in multiple new guys to this refined defense for the 2024-25 Season.

Alec Martinez has joined the Chicago Blackhawks on a one-year deal with a four million dollar cap hit, Martinez was drafted 4th round in the 2007 NHL Draft by the Los Angeles Kings, and he’s won 3 Stanley Cups in his career, 2 with the Kings and 1 with the Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2023, he’s going to provide skill and tons of experience for a young rebuilding Blackhawks team.

T.J. Brodie was also brought in as a free agent, he signed a two-year 7,500,000 Million Dollar contract which is $3,750,000 Million AAV, Brodie had 26 points in 76 games played with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season. Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson praised T.J Brodie.

T.J. is a strong, two-way defenseman that can play valuable minutes in any situation. He adds a wealth of experience to our room and we’re excited about the impact he’ll have on our team.
