Chicago Bears tight end Marcedes Lewis has re-signed with the team on a one-year deal. This will be Lewis’ 19th year in the NFL, the longest career by an NFL tight end. Last year, he signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Bears but it is unclear how much this newest deal will be worth. Marcedes Lewis is 40 years old, making him the second-oldest player in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers.
Marcedes Lewis will be just the second NFL tight end to play at 40 years old or older. The other player was Trey Junkin who played his last season at 41 with the Arizona Cardinals in 2002. Marcedes Lewis previously played for the Jacksonville Jaguars for 12 seasons from the start of his career in 2006 to 2018. He then played for the Green Bay Packers for five seasons from 2018 to 2023.
Marcedes Lewis’ Career Stats

When I saw this news, I’ll be honest, I didn’t know Marcedes Lewis was still in the NFL. However, that’s the case for a lot of NFL players. A lot of times, once promising players fade into the background, you don’t hear about them much unless they set some record like this or are in the news for some other noteworthy reason.
I knew Marcedes Lewis was great on the Jaguars and he was a popular pick in fantasy football but that’s about where my knowledge about him ended.
Marcedes Lewis has 40 receiving touchdowns in his career, tying Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews for the fifth most by an active tight end. He caught a career-best 10 touchdowns in 2010 with the Jaguars, which was tied for the seventh-most that season. Along with Marcedes Lewis’ 40 career touchdowns, he has eclipsed 436 receptions for 5,113 receiving yards and an average of 11.7 yards per catch in his 18-year NFL career.
Lewis has played in 268 games, the most among active NFL players. Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten are the only tight ends who have played more games than Lewis. Gonzalez played 270 games in 17 seasons and Witten played 271 in 17 seasons as well.
The Chicago Bears New Era Of Young Stars

The Chicago Bears had a great 2024 draft and (hopefully) got their quarterback of the future in USC quarterback Caleb Williams. Not only did the Chicago Bears beef up their quarterback room, but they also beefed up their wide receiver room too, selecting Washington wide receiver Rome Odunze with the 9th overall pick.
It will be an exciting time for Marcedes Lewis and the rest of the team as the Chicago Bears are poised to have a solid showing in the 2024 season, something they haven’t been able to say for a while.
This could be the best team Marcedes Lewis has been on since he was on the 2019 Packers, who went 13-3 and lost to the 49ers in the Divisional Round. Lewis has the most hyped-up quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck throwing to him. Even though Lewis is not the number one or even number two tight end on the team, he can take pride in himself knowing that no NFL tight end has played more seasons than him.
