The Chicago Bears came into the 2024 season with high hopes. It looked solid through the first third of the season, but the wheels have come off. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was the first coach to be fired. Head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t last much longer, as he was fired a few weeks later. This left Thomas Brown to shoot up the coaching ranks in the organization. He began the season as the pass game coordinator but took over the OC position when Waldron was let go. The team then promoted him to interim head coach a few weeks later. GM Ryan Poles revealed Brown will get a formal interview in the coming weeks.
Chicago Bears To Formally Interview Thomas Brown
The team hasn’t looked much different under Thomas Brown. They have lost four straight and end their season against the Packers (currently at halftime as of the writing of this article). However, Ryan Poles was impressed with what he had done for the Chicago Bears organization and revealed that he would get a formal interview.
“He will get an interview, and I’m excited to hear his thoughts. Because he’s been here. He’s been here, he’s seen and reflected just like we have on the past and how we got to this and why were the results, the results. So I’m excited to hear from his side on how we got here and how he would fix it.”
“I’ve been so impressed with Thomas and his leadership. I know the results haven’t come. That was a very difficult situation he’s been put in. I grew up in this business where you earn more, and that’s exactly how we got here with Thomas. I feel like he’s done a really good job.”
We’ve seen in the last few years that strong leaders tend to have more success. The Detroit Lions have seen success under Dan Campbell because the team rallies behind him. It is what makes Mike Vrabel a hot coaching candidate in this hiring cycle. Poles is excited about what he has seen in the locker room, and the players seem to be responding as well.
A Courtesy Interview
I would be shocked if the Chicago Bears hired Thomas Brown as their head coach. While they are doing him a courtesy in interviewing him, he started the year as a passing game coordinator. To upgrade him to head coach less than a year later would be questionable. If the team was undefeated under him and showing massive improvement, maybe this would make sense. However, the team has shown minimal growth. Furthermore, with the quality of potential candidates out there, the Bears can do better.
They have a desirable job. Caleb Williams has looked good in his first season. He has things to work on, but overall, he has shown he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Rome Odunze has steadily improved, and the defense has some budding young stars. With some better coaching, this team could easily make a playoff push in the NFC next year.
Final Thoughts
It is almost the NFL offseason for over half the teams. The Chicago Bears are one of many teams that have to make a decision about who to hire to lead their team. Who will they ultimately go with?
