Chicago Bears’ Safety and Corner Out For Week 6

The Chicago Bears will be without two key players on Sunday in London.

Chicago Bears Safety Jaquan Brisker and Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson have terrorized opposing offenses all season. Brisker and Stevenson have some of the best individual statistics of any DBs in the entire NFL thus far. Brisker entered concussion protocol against the Panthers and did not make the trip with the team to London for the game against Jacksonville. Stevenson made the trip, but just popped up with a calf injury, and is listed as doubtful.

Bears Starting Corner Doubtful

Starting Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson has been listed as doubtful for the game in London on Sunday morning with a calf injury. This news comes as a huge blow to the depth of the Chicago Bears’ secondary which is already missing backup Corner Terell Smith, who did not make the trip to Europe with a hip injury.

In 2024, Stevenson already has one interception that he returned for a touchdown, five passes defended, and 26 total tackles. Being without two marquee starters in the secondary makes the Chicago Bears’ vaunted pass defense much more susceptible to exploitation by breakout rookie sensation, WR Brian Thomas Jr.

The Chicago Bears are left with only two backup corners, stranded across the pond if something happens to another one. The likely fill-ins at CB are a committee of Jaylon Jones and Kyler Gordon with Josh Blackwell filling in the gaps. The other starting cornerback, All-Pro Jaylon Johnson will likely be relied upon to man up and shut down Thomas Jr. That leaves Jones and company on the other side to do the job against the other Jaguars’ pass catchers, though Brisker will not be there to help over the top.

Brisker Weather In Chicago

Wind, rain, snow, or sun – it’s always Brisker weather in Chi-Town. Now in his third season out of Penn State, Brisker has been a starting safety for the Chicago Bears since his first game as a rookie in 2022. In his first two seasons with the Bears, Brisker accumulated 209 total tackles, five sacks, two interceptions, 11 passes defended, two fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, eight tackles for a loss, and seven QB hits. Brisker has missed two games in his first two seasons due to injury but has otherwise been a stalwart of the Bears’ defense throughout his tenure.

In the first five games of 2024, Brisker has already accrued 40 total tackles, one INT, one forced fumble, one sack, two passes defended, three tackles for a loss, and one QB hit. Brisker played on 100% of the defensive snaps for the Chicago Bears this season until he was taken out of the game against the Carolina Panthers with a concussion, after already playing 85% of the game. Backup Safeties Elijah Hicks and Jonathan Owens will do their best to fill Brisker’s shoes, but his presence will be greatly missed when the Bears play the Jaguars in London on Sunday morning.

Final Thoughts

What should be a fantastic matchup for the Chicago Bears’ passing offense against the Jaguars’ pass defense, is now looking like it could also be a nice matchup for the Jaguars’ pass-catchers against the Bears’ secondary. Being down two of your best pass defenders will have that effect, but the Chicago Bears defensive scheme is still solid. Plus, there are enough other good players on the Bears’ defense who now have an opportunity to step up and prove that they can hold down the fort while their teammates need to miss some time to heal.
