Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has been a very hot topic this offseason in the NFL so far. The presumption now is that the Bears will draft Caleb Williams with the first overall pick. With that being the most likely outcome, the attention now turns to trade compensation for Justin Fields.
What Value does Justin Fields have?
Last season, Fields had 2,562 passing yards and rushing 657 yards while totaling 20 total touchdowns through the air and ground.
It is very hard to try and gauge what exactly the Chicago Bears might get for Justin Fields because his stats were slightly underwhelming las year. However, the progress Fields made after returning from injury were promising especially with him significantly reducing his turnovers and helping lead the team to 4-3 record.
Justin Fields is a very interesting quarterback prospect. He is only 25 years old and under contract for next season and potentially 2025 if his fifth-year option is picked up. After that, any team wanting him long-term would have to pay him big QB money. His dynamic ability to use his legs to extend plays and quickly rack up rushing yards is what makes this such an interesting debate.
Previous Compensation for Quarterbacks Traded
The potential return for the Chicago Bears is critical as the team is ready to make a jump and be playoff-contenders this year. Adding more premium draft capital will only help.
It is important to look back at previous trades at the position to try to understand what other teams received in a quarterback trade. In 2022, the Washington Commanders traded for Carson Wentz, and the Colts received two third-round picks. The biggest difference was Wentz also came with a 28 million dollar contract.
In 2022 the Denver Broncos also traded for a QB in Russell Wilson and gave up a haul. The haul includes two first-round picks, two-second round picks and a fifth-round pick. This trade obviously ended up being a disaster for the Broncos and seemingly a massive over-pay.

It is believed that Justin Fields ends up a back-up in 2024 or a placeholder for a team developing a rookie QB.

I would think it is safe to assume the trade compensation the Chicago Bears will end up receiving would be closer to the Carson Wentz trade instead of the Russell Wilson. One of the biggest ways in which trade compensation increases is with potential suitors getting into a bidding war. Given his low salary in 2024 and his ability to create his legs, there is still more value in him than people think. Plus, there are multiple teams desperate for a competent quarterback. With there seemingly being interest from multiple teams, the return for Fields would probably net a conditional third-round pick and multiple picks on day 3 in the draft.
Now, with the 2024 NFL Draft 50 days away and the Free Agency Legal Tampering Period starting on Monday, everyone in the NFL is waiting to see when Justin Fields will get traded and what exactly they will get in return.
