Interesting Chicago Bears News Roundup From Week 7

The Chicago Bears have some storylines heading into Sunday's game.

The Chicago Bears were on their bye in week 7, and it was a relatively quiet week of news on the Bears front, which is exactly how you want a bye week to be. However, a few stories popped up about upcoming opponents of the Chicago Bears, a former Bears player, and speculation about which players the Bears should trade for before the November 5 NFL Trade Deadline.

Jayden Daniels Injures Ribs

If you’ve lived under a rock for several months now, you wouldn’t know that the rookie QB for Washington Commanders – Jayden Daniels – is pretty good at professional football. You also would not understand how much improvement the Bears’ rookie QB, Caleb Williams, has shown in the past several weeks after a rough start. You also would not have heard the NFL altered the kickoff time from noon CDT to 3:25 CDT for the Chicago Bears’ upcoming game against the Washington Commanders in Landover, Maryland on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The NFL moved the game into a time slot with national coverage for the game of the week on CBS, which probably means that Jim Nantz and Tony Romo will be calling the game. The reason the Chicago Bears vs. Washington Commanders game was flexed into the national spotlight by the NFL is that these two rookie quarterbacks went as the number one (Caleb Williams) and two (Jayden Daniels) overall picks in this year’s NFL Draft. Williams has been improving his game every single week. Daniels has been balling out since week 1, largely due to having one of the best offensive lines in the league.

Daniels was forced to leave the Commanders’ game against the Carolina Panthers in week 7 due to an injury to his ribs in the first quarter. Daniels was ruled out for the remainder of the game and was seen smiling in street clothes on the sidelines in the third quarter. Early tests indicated no fractures to his ribs, but further testing will be done in the coming hours to help determine the severity of the injury. Veteran QB Marcus Mariota, who was also a second overall pick in the NFL Draft (2015) took over for Daniels’ and played admirably in the Commanders in their 40-7 beatdown of the Panthers.

Jay Cutler In Trouble

The all-time leading passer in Chicago Bears history was arrested last week in Franklin, Tennessee on four charges: DUI, failure to exercise due care, violation of implied consent law, and possession of a handgun while under the influence. Allegedly, Cutler rear-ended a car at a stoplight with his white Dodge Ram pickup and attempted to pay off the other driver with $2,000 cash not to call the police. When police arrived they claimed that Cutler was stumbling around, slurring his words, and wreaked of alcohol.

After refusing field sobriety tests, Jay Cutler was taken into custody. Police took Cutler to a local hospital to get a blood sample to determine his BAC. The results have not been made public yet. Cutler was booked at the Williamson County Jail for prints and a mug shot. Cutler was released later that night after posting a $5,000 bond. At the time of the incident, Jay Cutler had a loaded Glock handgun in the center console and a rifle in the backseat of his Ram truck.

Chicago Bears Trade Rumors

Bears’ GM Ryam Poles has allegedly been fielding interest from other NFL teams showing interest in two Chicago Bears’ former starters: RB Kahlil Herbert and OL Nate Davis. The Bears need depth on their defensive line to help improve their run defense which can be leaky at times, and additional pass rush pressure up the middle.

One of the interested teams is allegedly the Cleveland Browns who have outstanding depth on their defensive line, a position group that the Bears are looking to bolster. In return, the Cleveland Browns are very thin on the offensive line due to injuries, so it could make sense to trade away disgruntled OL Nate Davis, who is no longer a starter for the Chicago Bears, for a player like Browns’ DT Quinton Jefferson.

Herbert would be a great trade target for a team in desperate need of a playmaker at running back, such as the Dallas Cowboys who have been struggling to run the football with Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliot. The New York Giants are another possible suitor with underwhelming veteran Devin Singletary and rookie Tyrone Tracy currently filling the role. The Chicago Bears would be looking for offensive line help first and defensive line second for Herbert’s services.

Conclusion

We will know soon enough if Commanders’ QB Jayden Daniels will be healthy enough to play in the top rookie QB showdown this Sunday afternoon. If Daniels can’t go, the Bears will be ready for Marcus Mariota to take control of the dynamic Washington offense. Either way, it will be a challenge for the Bears rush defense. Stopping the run will be a key to victory for the Bears.

Cutler is a hero and a villain in Chicago Bears football lore. He’s the leader in almost every career statistical category for the Bears. However, Cutler had some infamous moments and was notorious for his pouty body language and aloof press conferences that didn’t endear him to the fanbase. Behavior like this certainly won’t do anything to help his legacy with the Chicago Bears, but hopefully, he can get his act together.

Chicago Bears’ GM Ryan Poles has been active at the trade deadline in previous seasons. Bears fans can all but set their watch for when some deal will get done to help their roster. It’s a matter of which player(s) will be traded and for whom. It is still media speculation, but it would be a huge surprise if the Bears didn’t make any moves in the next two weeks before the NFL trade deadline.
