The Chicago Bears have had a busy offseason. They needed to fix their offensive line this season, and GM Ryan Poles answered the call. They picked up three new offensive linemen and are building around their franchise quarterback, Caleb Williams. With all the focus on the offense, it’s easy to forget about the defense. They have one of the best young secondaries in the league, and they have made a move to keep one key player in the fold for the near future. The team signed Kyler Gordon to a three-year deal, making him the highest-paid slot cornerback in the league.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports it is a three-year, $40 million deal with $31.25 million guaranteed. This will keep him with the team through 2028. This isn’t necessarily a surprise, as Poles hinted a few weeks ago that he wanted to lock down the former second-round pick, saying, “…I know Kyler is a guy that we want to be a part of this moving forward. So the timing of that, I’m not sure how that all is going work out, but that is a priority.”
In three years with the Chicago Bears, he has 207 tackles, 147 solo tackles, nine tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 17 passes defended, and five interceptions. This past year, he helped the team crack the top half of the league in scoring defense for the first time in almost half a decade. Tyrique Stevenson, Jaquan Brisker, and Jaylon Johnson, along with Gordon, have made the secondary very good.
Good Move?
This is a great move by the Chicago Bears. Right now, it might seem like an overpay. However, the NFL salary cap continues to go up. Players constantly want to be the highest paid player at a position in the league. When 2027 and 2028 roll around, this deal could look like a bargain if Kyler Gordon continues to develop.
This is the price of doing business in the NFL. Gordon has earned the contract with his play on the field. While some teams will drag their feet, Poles and the Bears have proactively signed one of their core players. They can now focus on getting the rest of the roster ready to compete in the tough NFC North.
Final Thoughts
The Chicago Bears have high expectations heading into the 2025 season. They hired Ben Johnson and brought in many players to help improve the team. It will be tough to compete with the Packers, Vikings, and Lions, but this team looks dangerous on paper.
