Chicago Bears Caleb Williams On Unsigned Contract: ‘I’m Not Handling That’

Chicago Bears Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears hope they have their quarterback of the future in Caleb Williams. After years of trying to find the right player for the position, they were able to get the former USC quarterback thanks to a trade. There is optimism that the team could sneak into the playoffs now that they have a higher ceiling at quarterback. However, Williams still remains unsigned. When asked about what was going on with his contract, Williams claimed ignorance.

It isn’t uncommon for a rookie to remain unsigned at this stage of the offseason. There are many details to work out, especially for a number one overall pick. Caleb Williams isn’t sweating it but acknowledged he isn’t really involved with the process. The quarterback spoke to the Chicago Tribune at a charity event and had this to say.

“I’m not handling that. My lawyers and attorney and everybody, the head of the Bears, everybody up there up top is handling that. That’s not my position that I’m handling.”

The rookie has made his demands clear to his team, and now he can focus on what is happening on the field. There is likely minor negotiating happening and a deal will get done in the coming weeks. It is worth noting that the ninth overall pick, wide receiver Rome Odunze, is also unsigned. The front office for the Chicago Bears has some work to do in the coming weeks.

2024 Outlook

The Chicago Bears have made many upgrades to their roster in the past few seasons, but most notably on offense. While Caleb Williams was the biggest story, the Bears also traded for veteran receiver Keenan Allen and signed running back D’Andre Swift. This team has never had a 4,000-yard passer, and the former Trojan is looking to break that curse his rookie season.

It isn’t going to be easy. The Lions and the Packers kept their teams intact, and both made the playoffs last year. Detroit especially has Super Bowl aspirations after handing out a massive amount of money this offseason in extensions. Outside of their divisional opponents, head coach Matt Eberflus has to show he can coach a winning team.

Ultimately, the Chicago Bears and their fans simply want hope. They want hope that this team can be a contender for years to come. Even if this year doesn’t end in a playoff berth, fans want to see a team with an exciting future. Caleb Williams has a chance to become an instant fan favorite. Fans will breathe a little easier once he is signed.
