Chelsea will host Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and Enzo Maresca will try to get his first home win of the season. Following another hectic summer transfer window, Chelsea can now only concentrate on stabilizing their team and look ahead to greater things. The loss against Manchester City in their first match of the season did not give Enzo Maresca the start he had wanted. They however corrected this with an emphatic victory last weekend at Molineux.
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace: Preview
Chelsea signed Jordan Sancho on deadline day, capping an eventful transfer window. The winger might not, however, be included in the matchday squad as he will be unable to register in time for the action this weekend.
Undoubtedly, Crystal Palace will want to subject Chelsea to consecutive home losses to begin a season for the first time since 1978–79. But so far, Oliver Glasner’s team has not had luck on their side, as they are close to the bottom of the table after two losses in a row. Eberechi Eze’s free kick that was disallowed against Brentford formed the major discussion point after the game against the Bees. The 26-year-old hit the crossbar and was unable to find the net against West Ham United. Poor defending has also contributed to recent losses for Palace.
Team News & Stats
Mykhaylo Mudryk is the only clear player who could lose his spot in the starting lineup for Chelsea, as Enzo Maresca could stick with the lineup that defeated Wolves. Pedro Neto did not go to Geneva, but he replaced Mudryk at halftime against the Wolves. The 24-year-old may make his complete debut after setting up Chelsea’s sixth goal through a layoff to Joao Felix.
It’s unlikely that any of the players selected for Thursday’s match against Servette will start this weekend. But Madueke and Enzo Fernandez were unexpected additions from the start against Servette and should be in the starting XI against Palace. Romeo Lavia and Reece James are still sidelined due to injuries, and Reece James is also serving a suspension from the previous campaign.
Palace would come to Stamford Bridge with a strong XI, hoping to finally get off the mark. Chadi Riad has also been forced to sit out since midweek due to injury, joining Matheus Franca, who is still out with an injury. With Joachim Andersen’s departure, Riad’s injury poses a challenge for Glasner. Marc Guehi would stay at Palace despite Newcastle United’s strong interest. Sam Johnstone departed for Wolves, and this means Dean Henderson will undoubtedly wear the number one jersey this season. However, Matt Turner is coming from Nottingham Forest to offer depth and competition.
