Jadon Sancho has recently completed a loan move to Chelsea with an obligation to buy an option when the season ends. The Manchester United loanee has been looking forward to leaving the Red Devils since January when he was sent out on loan at Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of last season’s campaign. Now, with a stacked squad at Chelsea, especially with so many forwards contending for a place in the starting eleven. Sancho might struggle to find his way into the team and unlock his potential lost in Manchester’s Reds.
Can Chelsea Revive Sancho’s Career?

Jadon Sancho was one of the brightest talents in world football just two years ago. He made his mark in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund domestically and in Europe, scoring 53 times and providing 67 assists in 158 games. Originally a product of the Manchester City youth academy, Sancho accepted a move to Manchester United in 2021 for about 73 million pounds and returned to the Premier League. One may characterize his time at Manchester United as incredibly underwhelming.
The United Curse, which many new arrivals at Old Trafford have been experiencing for the past ten years, struck him with just 12 goals and six assists in more than 84 games for United. The most memorable incident during Sancho’s time at Old Trafford was his falling out with Erik Ten Hag, who publicly accused him of not giving it his all during Manchester United’s training and left him out of the squad when he reacted angrily to his manager’s remarks. The manager forced him to train separately and apologize first, which he refused. This all led to his loan move to Borussia Dortmund in January 2024.
Sancho had a decent stint in the Signal Iduna Park. Helping them reach the UEFA Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid. He gave commendable performances, especially against PSG in the semi-finals. However, with just three goals and two assists in 21 games, Dortmund decided not to purchase him permanently at the end of the season, and he returned to Manchester United. Chelsea, as usual, has spent a total of 225 million pounds, more than any other team in the transfer market.
They wanted to bolster the attack with signings like Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, and many more, giving their attacking strength to nine players. With Sterling moving to Arsenal and enough depth already to cover for him, Chelsea continued to believe they needed to add a winger to their roster. They signed Sancho on a season-long loan with an option to buy for 25M with add-ons reaching 30M pounds. Is he able to reach his full potential at Chelsea? His first thought is, “How can I get into the starting lineup with so much competition?”
How Does he Fit in at Chelsea?
Safe to say, Sancho just opted for the first option available on his table, desperate to get out of Manchester United. Being a lifelong Chelsea fan, as he claimed, he was excited to be a part of the London Giants. However, where does he even feature under Enzo Maresca? Chelsea have a stacked forward list with players like Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku, Mudryk, Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, and David Detro Fofana already part of the squad even before they made any signings this summer.
The Portuguese duo Joao Felix, Pedro Neto, and Marc Guiu, the young striker, the recruits add and make just the attacking numbers to 8 players. There is a high chance that Sancho might find it hard to settle in and struggle here. Chelsea would look to put in the strongest possible lineup to get back to being on the best sides in the world. Sancho would have to be at his best in any playing time he gets to have regular playing time.
As a player already struggling for form for the past three years, Chelsea’s purpose behind Sancho’s recruit would only be squad depth. As they want to compete on all fronts, including the UEFA Conference league, they have enough depth now to tweak different lineups in each competition. Sancho would have to work individually, as Maresca is a demanding coach. He requires his players to work hard and contribute in attack and defense, something Sancho has been criticized for before.
Is this the right move for a player who is struggling for form? Considering Chelsea themselves being very inconsistent. Can he turn his career around and force the club to make the move permanent?
