Chelsea has decided to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino as their head coach. This decision was reached by mutual agreement, marking the end of his tenure after less than a year in charge. Chelsea decided to part ways with the 52-year-old Argentine manager after conducting an internal review of the club’s performance during the 2023-24 season. The review was led by co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart.
Pochettino took over as Chelsea’s new manager ahead of the 2023-24 season replacing interim boss Frank Lampard. This move came as the club’s new owners, Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, sought to bring a fresh perspective to Stamford Bridge after a disappointing 12th-place finish in the previous campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino Leaves Chelsea by Mutual Consent
According to reports from British media, Mauricio Pochettino has departed from his role as Chelsea manager after just one season as the head coach of the Premier League club. Chelsea emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth in their final Premier League match of the season. This game ensured Chelsea finished sixth place in the Premier League table. Mauricio Pochettino ensured to bring back European football to Stamford Bridge for the 2024-25 season.
After Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel were fired last season, resulting in Frank Lampard’s interim leadership, Pochettino became Chelsea’s sixth permanent manager in five years. Chelsea made a significant investment of over £400 million ($507m) ahead of Pochettino’s debut season in charge. The West London club signed a lot of youngsters last summer and had a squad overhaul. Mauricio Pochettino was perhaps the perfect person to bring together these youngsters as he had done so successfully while managing Spurs.
What Next For Mauricio Pochettino
Pochettino started his managerial journey at Espanyol after he retired as a player. He then went to Southampton for 16 months, where he made his debut as a head coach in the Premier League. Following his stint there, he took over as manager at Tottenham Hotspur, where he achieved a remarkable feat by guiding the club to the final of the UEFA Champions League in 2019. However, after a lackluster beginning to the 2019-20 season, the Argentine was sacked by Spurs.
After his tenure at Tottenham, Pochettino decided to take a break from coaching. He then returned to coach Paris Saint-Germain in January 2021. In the 2020-21 season, the French club finished second place in Ligue 1, which was very disappointing. However, they won both the Coupe de France and the Trophee des Champions. In the 2021-22 season under Pochettino, PSG emerged as the champions of Ligue 1. Unfortunately, Pochettino’s tenure at PSG came to an end in June 2022 without any European triumphs to his name.
With Pochettino’s recent departure from Chelsea, the big question now is whether the Argentine will opt for a well-deserved break from management or swiftly make a move to another club before the upcoming season starts. Bayern Munich is still looking for a manager, and there is a possibility the Argentine could coach Harry Kane once again.
